diogenis Posted August 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I tried to login this day only to see that Mark is leaving for an unfortunate and silly reason, and a whole mess of locked messages and some more bashing to moderators that are indeed volunteers on this. First of all Mark, you should return, I'm sure you are more than welcomed in this forum, and you also must excuse sometimes. Regardless of Marc's decision, we are all responsible for this mess: we should ALL understand that we CANNOT escalate a matter the way it happened on this post. May I suggest moderators to take some action and apply some rules? Posts number is not needed, and so does the titles under our names (I never understood what they meant) what do you guys think? If we make everyone equal to everyone maybe we have a lot less bashing? Other members thoughts on this?
Advertisement Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 Hi diogenis, Take a look here An unfortunate day.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sdai Posted August 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 28, 2009 It really was just a tempest in the teacup. As Andy has said, anyone can have a bad day, I'm sure Mark has many more important things to care about than these forum stuff, I hope he already has a good night's sleep and a chuckle to start the new day. No need to blame anybody, world peace.
jrc Posted August 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 28, 2009 Indeed. I was once involved in a clash between a middle-level exec and a technical guy (one of the most valuable technical guys in that particular business) and when they took the discussion up a level, the woman in charge simply cancelled the clash. The mid-level exec wanted the tech punished (essentially for insubordination) and the tech wanted the exec to admit he was wrong about the issue, and the woman in charge simply wanted to go back before it started -- and that was what she decreed. No apologies, no commentary, no kiss-and-make-up, no continuation of the discussion. It worked, somewhat to everybody's surprise. Two people still had some hurt feelings, but everybody else just pretended that nothing had happened. We simply rewound to the point before the argument. That's what should happen here. There's always a little testiness rolling around the net, and we put up with it. That's life in the big city, eh? And I would dearly like to hear what Mark has to say about the M9. (Although I'd have to say, if I were to try to list the ten biggest assholes on this forum, Mark wouldn't have nearly made the list... though I might.) redbaron Posted August 28, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 28, 2009 Off topic, I know, but: Two guys are out duck hunting when a hang-glider flies over. Boooom! goes one's gun. Åmund Posted August 28, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 28, 2009 I see that Mark is back, to my great relief. I am quite new to this forum, just made the grade of "Benutzer", but I think that the tone in the forum mostly have been extremely knowledgeable, at times hilariously funny and surprisingly civil. I think it is the curse of internet that it is sooo easy to type in affect and thus write things that you in a calmer mood might have wished unpublished . As Churchill once said: Speak in anger and you will make the best speech you ever regretted! Åmund
diogenis Posted August 28, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted August 28, 2009 Yes he just came back! Like, I said, It is time for the moderators to consult and maybe rethink their policies on what I believe is inappropriate like grades (benutzer, etc...) and number of posts

So, nice to see that Mark is still here and also to have a belly laugh at a timely joke too.

"What was that?" the other asks. "No idea, but it sure dropped that bloke it was holding!" :p:) No need to start a new thread when you're back, red barron. We'll be looking out anyway for your next tension releasing little story. MO is that the post count is a good thing and that it should stay. Simply because the kiloposters are also mostly those, who are the most helpful to newbees, enthusiastic amateurs with less time and experience and convinced spoon fed non-researchers by ANSWERING QUESTIONS. As a teen-ager back in the seventies I worked for a whole summer in a local camera store, when a non-Leica snapper asked me what the 00 on his lens stands for. Tried to explain red-headed infinity, focussing, DOF etc. He answered, not taking any bull from a smart-a. school-kid: "If it was like that, how come there's no Null, Null on my flash?!?" Difficult, I know.... Maybe instead of " Erfahrener Benutzer" "Known Troll" under the name.

Difficult, I know.... Maybe instead of " Erfahrener Benutzer" "Known Troll" under the name. Excuse my ignorance, but what is a "troll" in the context of this forum? I recall miniature figures from years ago known as "trolls" - they had bushy beards and moustaches, and big noses, wore medieval-style helmets and carried swords or spears. And they had big feet. Sort of humorous little things. But I sense a different meaning here ...

Sort of humorous little things. But I sense a different meaning here ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet) ...server-space bandits, in other words. May be monotheistic in their espousal of a pet theory. Often critical and argumentative, with nothing positive to say. Critical of authority. Tend to try and make allies among the unwary by engaging with and praising them so that they have people who will misguidedly defend them if they are outed. Hijack threads to their own agenda. Ask deliberately naive questions. Build, and live in, their own realities. Masters of the vague but sweeping generalisation - "Everybody agrees", "many here say", "as we all know" and so on. Usually male, usually intelligent in an animal cunning sort of way, always destructive. Regards, Bill

redbaron Posted August 28, 2009 Share #13 Posted August 28, 2009 Geez, what a definition! I've just hit the ignore button on one particular troll. The only sane method of dealing with them, in my opinion.

Jamie Roberts Posted August 28, 2009 Share #15 Posted August 28, 2009 ....and here I always thought it also had to do with "trolling"--which is a kind of fishing where you put the bait in the water and move the boat along Trolls put "flame-bait" in the forums and watch the rest of us thrash about... Difficult, I know.... Maybe instead of " Erfahrener Benutzer" "Known Troll" under the name. ok, we cant categorize people like this, and this is my motivation when I say that we need to get rid of the posts counter and the titles. as moderators are volunteers and have their own work to attend, then maybe it is time for this forum to hire a full time moderator as a watchman for when things get hot
abrewer Posted August 28, 2009 Share #17 Posted August 28, 2009 ....maybe it is time for this forum to hire a full time moderator ... I shall count you as the first vote in favor, and my own is second
Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 28, 2009 Share #18 Posted August 28, 2009 If I may you want to stop trolls and you want moderators to be able to handle things and you want no hurt feelings and insults thrown at you or by you. There is ONLY ONE solution to all of the same issue. Let me spell it out as a forum owner myself. Very simple thing to do STOP PISSING ON EACH OTHER Trust me it WORKS. andybarton Posted August 28, 2009 Share #19 Posted August 28, 2009 ... maybe it is time for this forum to hire a full time moderator as a watchman for when things get hot How much subscription would you be willing to pay to cover the employment costs of such a person? Bearing in mind, you would need to employ at least three, if not four, people to be able to make somone available 24/7. Guy's suggestion is the most sensible one, IMHO. If some people were a bit more tolerant of others, and bore in mind the global membership, with all that entails with regards to English as a language (on this half ), cultural differences, and the like, then the Moderators wouldn't have much to do. Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 28, 2009 Share #20 Posted August 28, 2009 Hiring of mods. will have no affect on the effectiveness of the moderation at all and if anything will be more strict with more warnings and more banning. I don't want to speak for the mods here or Andreas which I have a lot of respect for these folks because I have mods. myself that are unpaid and just nice people which is the same here. But Andy is dead on with cultural differences and language. Seriously when in doubt on a post at you send a PM to just get clarification if you don't understand what someone is referring too before you reply in public. The bottom line it is YOU the forum members that truly dictate the tone of a forum not the owners or the mods. I will step out of this conversation now since it is really not my place but I truly support the back end of these forums.
