matts Posted August 27, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I'm fairly new to this forum, but after entering the Leica RF world, I thought it'd be a good idea to be part of the community. I've quite enjoyed my M8, even though it means selling off my Canon kit, and while I accepted most of the sensor issues, I sometimes encounter something weird and inexplicable. A few questions for those who have answers (forgive me if they're common): Why does cyan fringing only happen occasionally? I am of mostly referring to my CV 15 here. I recently coded it as a 21mm, but I think that may still be causing minor shifting on rare occasions - I cannot test the effectiveness of coding it as a 21 since the shifting only happens occasionally. When I use an IR filter and shoot at point light sources, I often get blue dots/glows. Leica and another user told me this is normal - do I basically have to decide - blue dots or purple blacks? Lastly, I just discovered this today, when I took a photo of a bright window in a dark church, when the window was cut off by half, I got a massive green streak coming down from it. What could be causing this? Thanks

Guest WPalank Posted August 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 28, 2009 Matts, Welcome to the Forum. there are others that are better at addressing the drift with the corners when using wide lenses, so I will step aside with that issue. However: When I use an IR filter and shoot at point light sources, I often get blue dots/glows. Leica and another user told me this is normal - do I basically have to decide - blue dots or purple blacks? First, it doesn't always happen. Typically when I am doing low light photography at night, I will slip my UV/IR filter off. It happens on all cameras using even a simple UV filter which many use to protect the front lens element. Lastly, I just discovered this today, when I took a photo of a bright window in a dark church, when the window was cut off by half, I got a massive green streak coming down from it. What could be causing this? Take a look at this thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/67056-nasty-green-streak-again.html I think you will find by adjusting your camera a couple of millimeters one way or another will remove the problem. adan Posted August 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 28, 2009 On the subject of occasional random changes in cyan fringing: Sometimes it has to do with subject arrangement in the picture: We had an example a couple of weeks ago where 1) there was bright pink clothing in the middle of the frame and 2) a white wall as the whole background. Between possible diffuse flare from the clothing making the center pinker, and the white wall revealing any cyan drfit with no camouflage, the effect was extreme. If the edges of your picture are all green trees, for example, any under or overcorrection for cyan drift may be very hard to notice. I have noticed occasional overcorrection for cyan drift with my 15, 21 and 28 - the edges become too RED in the final shot. I have not been able to correlate this with exposure or white balance or other factors to figure out why it happens - although it seems to relate to cloudy days. Maybe the flatter light is a factor in causing it or making it more noticable. In any event, we should remember that the filter corrections are a "best guess" by the camera based on focal length via coding and perhaps a rough approximation of shooting aperture via the exernal blue-dot meter. Most of the time the guesses are good - sometimes they are a bit wild. Green streaks are a sensor issue - no relationship to filters or focal lengths. matts Posted August 28, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted August 28, 2009 Thanks. I guess that solves the rest of the issues I have. There are times I keep thinking I should've just kept my 5D and got an M6 instead. Oh well.

There are times I keep thinking I should've just kept my 5D and got an M6 instead. Oh well. Again, it doesn't happen all the time. here's one I took early morning and left the IR cut filter on with no problems:
