Welcome.

You will more likely get a response if you post in the right sub-forum, and if you take the time to browse the wealth of information that is there first, before asking such a basic question:

No need to post twice, either ;)

Welcome to the Forum.

Might be a simple question, but there's no simple answer as the various software is available to meet differing user demands.

It's generally agreed that Lightroom is the easiest and it's conversions are excellent. It should satisfy most users needs and is especially good for volume.

Capture One does a 'better' RAW conversion, is not as user friendly, but is great if you're pushing the last ounces of quality from the file. If you're at that level, you will need the Pro version with it's extra facilities, IMO.

Iridient Raw Developer provides an even better conversion from what I've seen in my demo period this last two weeks, but the interface is far from Lightroom and it needs more upgrades to be the best available. It bring clarity from the file that might not have been seen.

Photoshop is needed for many expert post processing tasks and is needed to enhance images developed by the other programmes, if you need the enhancements. It's the one programme that i would have if I could only have one, but it takes a long time to learn.

If I was recommending any to a family member - it would be Lightroom.

So, you have to decide what your needs are, or explain them here more fully if you need more assistance.

  • 2 weeks later...

I 've been using aperture nearly 2 years, and i have built all my photos in its library, but i am going to regret it as i start using Capture One. The quality of Capture is much better though aperture is better and faster organizer. What i am doing now is to collect and export the photos as DNG to a folder and after processing in Capture.

Harold - As suggested earlier, there is a lot discussion to be found by using the Search facility in the M8 Forum. Many people favour Capture 1's files over Adobe versions, but dislike Capture's poor interface. Adobe RAW conversions either through Lightroom, or Photoshop, use the same converter. Your simple question has many answers depending on needs and dislikes.

I second Rolo's advice.

C1 is the best one for quality (LR is the best workflow).

Raw Developer is another league..

For portraits and

shots which need real detail, micro-contrasts and neutral

rendering, I don't use anything else.

My workflow (simplified):

1. Extraction in C1

2. Raw Dev

3. Process and save to CS3

4. Fine processing in CS3.
