Nathan King Miller Posted November 17, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 17, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey Folks, Since purchasing my V-Lux 1 a week ago, I joined the Leica forum and have already grown so thrilled by the work I've seen here, I've bought a Leica C-Lux 1 just so I can have a Leica everywhere I go. Thought I'd drop my first couple of pictures from the V-Lux. The christmas tree ornament was photographed at ISO 200. Don't remember the exposure time. Welcome, dear visitor! With all the talk about poor night shots, I thought I would push the camera to the extreme by shooting a candle in a basket with no other light source. The image turned out very nice with an ISO of 100 and a 1 second shutter. This image was cropped in Photoshop. It seems as long as you stay at a low ISO and a low shutter speed, night photography can be quite rewarding. I wouldn't venture into any nightclubs, however. It's thrilling getting back into photography with these cameras. I've been in the documentary filmmaking field for several years now and haven't done a great deal of still photography - not since my photo class at USC over 5 years ago (the Carson Palmer days). John Reynolds, from this forum, has really inspired me with his gorgeous work done with the Digilux and C-Lux 1. Phenomenal! Check it out at: Leica User Forum Thanks for the inspiration John. It is also worth shooting a few frames in the manufacturers special program modes, (like night time, fireworks, sport, landscape or whatever they are) then having a look at embedded exif later and working out why the the manufacurer chose those settings. Manufacturers have a pretty good idea of the behaviour and the strengths and weaknesses of their own product. Good place to begin the learning process, and sometimes it is an eye opener, even if you never intend to use those programs. If you google View Exif you will turn up a heap of shareware free download programs for viewing exif info, if you dont already have one. For example, this is the exif for your first shot above. I will definitely find a compatible program. And I guess I was wrong about the ISO 200 on the first shot. It was actually ISO 400. I remember shooting with 400 speed film back in high school, so I naturally assumed 400 would be good all-around. Wrong. I'm much more pleased with the 100-200 range. Lots to learn, obviously. As far as venturing beyond ISO 400, I haven't been brave enough yet. I'm just too fond of these images. Oh, and I added just a touch of unsharp mask in PCS2 to both photos, but I noticed more of a contrast change than actually sharpening. The original images were very sharp indeed, and I'd be happy to post those if anyone so desires. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
rob_x2004 Posted November 17, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 17, 2006 Nathan, I havent seen this camera but it should be a good little beast when you get it worked out. ISO starts at 80, (Leica brochure) or 100, (Leica tech data), and whichever it is, it is worth beginning there. Remember your lens starts at 7.4mm, so there is a lot you can get away with. You will see people saying "get into RAW conversions" and really, if you want image quality it is worth getting into straight away. Digital processing is a darn site easier than working out how to use your mobile phone. Get into it, ask questions here, you will pretty likely get reasonable help from forum members even if they do seem a little preoccupied at the moment with purple haze. Nathan King Miller Posted November 17, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted November 17, 2006 Thanks Rob. The ISO starts at 100 on the V-Lux, which I plan to use as my primary ISO for now. The C-Lux 1 offers an ISO of 80, which I'm curious to experiment with. I know everyone has different taste regarding RAW vs. JPEG. I haven't been dissatisfied with my JPEG quality and don't know a great deal about processing RAW, but I will probably try a few experiments with it anyhow. Thanks for the suggestion.
