elansprint72 Posted September 22, 2009 Author Share #21 Posted September 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) So, four weeks after the D2 arrived at Milton Keynes I have a letter from them, quote: Necessary Estimate £250.95 Unfortunately the factory has stated that the fault is not due to sensor failure. This now means that the repair is chargeable. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. All repairs are carried out in Germany and the price includes both labour time and any parts required. Labour: -Adjust camera switch. -Fix leather covering. -Replace main circuit board Parts: -Main CBA £37.64 Total £288.59 Hmmmm...... Ah well, at least I will have possibly the only factory leather-covered D2. Yeah, right. And the sensor??????

daveleo Posted September 22, 2009 Share #23 Posted September 22, 2009 if it was my D2 ....? .... i'd be upset for certain. would i fix it, or spend my € / $$$ on a new camera (the X1)? i guess if you can find a better way to spend £288.59 ($475US ? ) on a better camera, then do it. at the moment though, i can't think of what camera that would be. elansprint72 Posted October 21, 2009 Author Share #24 Posted October 21, 2009 Finally it is back, eight weeks to the day since it was received in Milton-Keynes, it appears to work. The "fit new leather" on the invoice, of course turned out to be replacement rubber, the camera looked pretty dirty and there was a big scratch across the rear screen which was not there when I sent it in. Fortunately this does not seem to have penetrated the protective film which was fitted to the screen. Lots of dust on the front of the lens; I should have left the UV filter on, not just the cap. Not exactly over the moon. No mention of the sensor being replaced. I'm very happy with my Nikon D700. Nuff said.
kaethe Posted October 22, 2009 Share #25 Posted October 22, 2009 oops i forgot to follow up with my digilux 2 problems as i am still floating from my surprise m9 from my husband. i sent the d2 in to new jersey, priority usps, received a reply back from them within a week that it was in fact my ccd, that it was not covered under the warranty, and that it had nothing to do with the previous sensor exchange, so i had them reapair it, as it was my favorite camera and i had it back within three weeks, all cleaned and polished. kaethe
tigrelis Posted November 1, 2009 Share #26 Posted November 1, 2009 Hello all, I am considering a purchase of a digilux 2 (my first). It is in great mint condition, but the owner (the second owner) said that neither he nor the first owner ever had the sensor changed/replaced. The serial number starts with 299--- so I think it is within the range for sensor failure. Would Leica replace the sensor for me if it failed on me, or not because I do not have original warranty? Should I take the plunge or wait for the next d2 to pop up online for sale? Thanks for your advice!

Go for it - with all the heat expressed on this forum, D2's for sale in mint condition are likely to be as scarce as hens teeth. The sensor issue is maybe a red herring, not all are afflicted. If the fault does arise, the warranty will cover it today, but forever? I doubt it. Meantime you could be enjoying the camera so why worry about it. dpitt Posted November 1, 2009 Share #28 Posted November 1, 2009 Should I take the plunge or wait for the next d2 to pop up online for sale? Tigrelis, My advice is : go for it. I took the plunge 2 months ago with a near mint camera snr: 3011xxxx. Sensor has never been replaced. My feeling (hope) is that Leica will at least continue warrenty repairs for 5 years after the last item produced. That would give us until 2011... The pleasure of using this cute little thing for two months was well worth the 450 Euros I paid for it. In a way I am not worried as much about wear with this one because I read about the free 'refurbishment' when you send it in. If the sensor fails I hope they will fix the lettering on the aperture ring which is worn off. The only worry is that when it fails I will have to miss it for several weeks. Partly because of that I bought a backup last week. This one has had the sensor replaced last year (snr. 26xxx), and it is not mint. The nice thing about it are the accessories that came with it. (filters, batteries, step up ring, remote control, bag) Once the sensor has been replaced in the first one, I might sell it without the accessories... At least that is the plan. Yesterday I used both, with one set to B&W the other to color (second one is leather coated) As my addiction grows, I might decide to keep them both forever
prk60091 Posted November 2, 2009 Share #29 Posted November 2, 2009 Not the usual failed sensor thing, working one minute, will not switch on the next. I've tried several charged batteries- nothing. Any suggestions? Thinks...... is it possible that the sensor can fail completely, without showing the rainbow streaks? check your sd card- i had a bad sd card in mine and mine wouldn't power up until i changed cards
