I am very noob D-lux 4. I've been experimenting a lot and I have this question to ask.

If I want to experiment with Program Mode, what are the things that I should be watching for? I mean what are the functions that I have to set before taking the shot?

Thank you in advance.

I think you answered your own question there - play with the settings yourself.

Not sure how you expect us to answer such a question based on nothing, ie what are you shooting?

What I could suggest is send me your D-Lux 4 I will take some fantastic images with it and send you some nice prints once a week :)

Seriously though, learn to use this fantastic tool, I assume you must be a decent enough photographer to drop £500 on a P&S camera to know that you can get the best out of it.

Have fun

I think this thread's gone off at a bit of a tangent and isn't providing the answer it sounds like you're looking for. I'll answer as though your fairly new to photography.

Program mode controls and alters the shutter speed and the aperture to make sure that the camera correctly exposes the shot. It is different from Auto mode because it allows you some control over the shutter speed and aperture. If you want more depth of field and stop down the aperture (make the hole smaller) with the joystick/toggle thingy, for example, then the camera will automatically adjust the shutter speed to a slower setting so that you end up with the correct exposure. Likewise, if you use the joystick/toggle thingy to increase the shutter speed to freeze motion then the camera will open up the aperture to keep the exposure value right.

It all works on a pre-programmed set of values based on the reading from the exposure meter. Read the manual to figure out how to change the aperture and shutter speed with the joystick/toggle thingy and take some shots to see how Program mode adjusts the aperture and shutter speed. (Unless you have AutoISO switched on) the camera will not adjust the ISO setting in Program mode.

HTH,

Pete.

Farnz,

Thank you for a very informative response. You are correct to assume that I am fairly new to photography that is why some people find my question a stupid one. Your response is exactly what I am looking for. That is exactly what I want to know. Now I understand that the apperture and the shutter speed are the two main things to set program mode or maybe even in other modes. Thank you so much.
