jimbo035 Posted August 15, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have just bought a lens adapter for the D-Lux 4, and am wondering which filter to buy (primarily to protect the front lens surface). An old filter habit from my fourty-year pre-digital period :-)

farnz Posted August 15, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 15, 2009 I have just bought a lens adapter for the D-Lux 4, and am wondering which filter to buy (primarily to protect the front lens surface). An old filter habit from my fourty-year pre-digital period :-) Jim, This probably isn't what you want to hear but today's lens coatings are much more resilient than they used to be, they don't really need protecting and by using a UV or skylight filter you're probably inviting problems from veiling flare. If you're determined to use a filter might I suggest a polariser for saturating colours and reducing reflections? Pete.
doubice Posted August 15, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 15, 2009 Jim, Another issue that is often forgotten - with the immense depth of field of today's P&S digital cameras, any imperfection on the filter (fingerprint, dirt etc.) will degrade the photo. And - with the adapter the filter is positioned far ahead of the front element and the sensor, making the issue even worse. About 2 years ago, I lent my wife my Canon G7 and about half way through our holidays her pictures started exhibiting severe unsharpness in one corner. She panicked, thinking that she 'broke my camera', until I examined it and found dirt on the front element. This type of dirt would have never influenced the results during my 35mm film days....
