PeterP Posted August 15, 2009 Share #21 Posted August 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The 28 Elmarit is one of my favorite lenses. 35 to close in focal length to 50, although I also have a 35 I rarely use it. Cheers
Advertisement Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Hi PeterP, Take a look here Please choose between 28 or 35, If you have 50. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
yanidel Posted August 15, 2009 Share #22 Posted August 15, 2009 28mm Cron seems the most versatile choice. I am now using the 24mm Elmarit (with a 60mm Hex though) because it is the only lens (compared to 28mm Cron and 35mm Lux Asph) where I am always impressed when I open the files, it is stellar. It also forces you to get closer.
thompsonkirk Posted August 15, 2009 Share #23 Posted August 15, 2009 The best choice would be either 28, if you wear glasses; or 24, if you don't. (24 framelines are hard to see with glasses.) 28 should probably be Summicron, not Elmarit; Elmarit is slow & contrasty. Kirk

chris_tribble Posted August 15, 2009 Share #25 Posted August 15, 2009 On the M8 the 28 Cron Asph will give you speed + portability and is pretty wide - it will complement the 50 better than a 35 IMHO. You can eventually step to 75 or 90 and have a very photo-documentary flexible set up . At some point you can then consider an 18 Zeiss or CV 15. nick.edwards1 Posted August 15, 2009 Share #26 Posted August 15, 2009 I took advice when I purchased an MP and paired it with a 50 lux asph. When I purchased my M8 I took the same advice and I got the 28 cron asph. The advice was 'on the nail', even in hindsight I could not have chosen better. Having just purchased Brian Bower's book I found the same advice on P143. Best regards, Nick.
hdrmd Posted August 15, 2009 Share #27 Posted August 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) 28 Summicron; no question if you already have a 50. 35 is too close to 50. I use 28 and 90. DR
tbarker13 Posted August 15, 2009 Share #28 Posted August 15, 2009 For me, it's either 28/50 or 28/90 if I'm carrying two lenses. If I'm using one lens, it's probably a 35. I'd agree that that 35 and 50 are too close together. But then I can also see how some people wouldn't feel that way. And really, only you know the focal lengths you are most comfortable with. sfokevin Posted August 16, 2009 Share #29 Posted August 16, 2009 One mark in favor of the 28 Elmarit over either Cron is that it's size with a hood is a bit smaller... I find my 28 Elmarit has become the lens cap for my M8... It makes the camera a nice compact package... But to each his own... I think your best course of action is to just make more shelf space and get them all!...
dseelig Posted August 16, 2009 Share #30 Posted August 16, 2009 For me no question 35 mm and then a 24 with a m8 or m6 . 28 is my least faviorite focal length a little too wide on film a little too long on a m8 . David

Manicouagan1 Posted August 16, 2009 Share #34 Posted August 16, 2009 For a range of travel shots my preferred combination with an M8 is a 50/1.4 ASPH and 24/2.8 ASPH. I find I use the 50/1.4 for portraits of people or sculpture and low light and the 24/2.8 for architecture and shots that set the context of the details. I have a 35/1.4 ASPH but find I rarely use it.
wilfredo Posted August 16, 2009 Share #35 Posted August 16, 2009 I currently shoot with a 35mm Summicron ASPH which I purchased for my film Leicas. If I were purchasing now for my M8, I would go with the 28mm, although I'm quite happy with my 35mm on the M8.
Puplet Posted August 16, 2009 Share #36 Posted August 16, 2009 Another vote for the 24 Elmarit! But 35mm Summicron failing that.
khiromu Posted August 19, 2009 Share #37 Posted August 19, 2009 If you are planning to have only two lenses, then I would chose 28. But if you are going to have three lens later, then 24/35/50 or 21/35/50 may work better...
Guest kirkmingle Posted August 19, 2009 Share #38 Posted August 19, 2009 I have the 28/50 setup myself, and I do not miss the 35 at all. The 28 Summicron-M is outstanding.
rick_dykstra Posted August 20, 2009 Share #39 Posted August 20, 2009 If it was a film M I'd say 35mm, but since you have an M8 I'll say 28m. Summicron or Elmarit depending on your budget. I think you'll be happy with either. +

This is actually the way I'm going; got the 28 summicron; cv 50/2.5, cv90, cv15. Expect to pick up the Zeiss 18 and 50/2.0, so I should be left with 18, 28, 50, 90 once all is said and done. JohnS.
