D-LUX2 Settings Questions

Hi All,

Firstly, as this is my first post to this forum I thought I should give a brief introduction of myself.

I am from England and live in Antwerp in Belgium. I am a keen although still fairly new photographer having been hooked on the hobby since buying a digital camera in 2004.

Anyway, my girlfriend very kindly bought me a D-LUX2 for my impending 30th birthday and was even more generous to allow me to have it before the date!

I have to say that the speed of the camera is incredible! The reason for my interest in this camera is that my other camera an Olympus C-8080 while very very good is too large to carry around all the time. I have not performed any direct tests but I do not feel the D-LUX2 is slower that the 8080 expect for startup which is amazing considering the size difference.

Anyway, after reading the manual, scouring forums and lots of on camera fiddling there are a few things I cannot fathom. If anybody could shed some light on the below questions I would be most grateful!

Can the flash intestity be directly controlled? I can see that EV has an effect but this does not alter the flash alone from what I can see. In manual which I am almost always in there appears to be no way to adjust the flash at all.

The AF/AE button appears to be obsolete in manual mode. Sure, the AE is not required and I guess you could question the need for an AF lock when you can prefocus and switch to manual or lock the shutter but that is the same in all exposure modes I presume?

Lastly, can the AF spot target be moved? If not, does anybody know what the difference between 1 area AF and spot focus?

Many Thanks,

Ed

Hello Ed,

Welcome to the Forum!

Glad to know you've got the DL2, its a great camera and I hope you'll be happy using it.

To answer your questions:

1) Flash intensity cannot be adjusted.

2) When you say Manual Mode, do you mean manual exposure as well as manual focus? I this case the AF/AE button will be redundant.

3) The AF target area cannot be moved. One Area AF focuses on an area approx eq to the brackets on the display, whereas spot AF will focus on a very small spot in the centre.

Hope this answers your questions.

Regards.

Hi Firoze,

Many thanks for your response and welcome!

Your answers do indeed help to clear the questions up!

I meant AF in M mode when I was asking about the AE/AF lock button. From what I can see the focus mode makes no difference to whether or not the button is enabled.

Is this your experience too?

I am a little surprised about the flash settings though as lots of reviews implied that this intensity was user adjustable. I have yet to see how the flash responds in pictures yet though.

Thanks once again!

Ed

yes, the flash intensity can be adjusted! two ways: ev or by aperture priority stopping it up and down. combine the two, and you can make the effect of flash very weak (even if the intensity of it is the same). i advise buying the metz 28 CS-2 slave flash. then with the weak on camera flash effect you can trigger the slave flash wherever you like. this flash is strong and small. various combinations are possible.

Thank you for the repsonses.

I was playing about last night and found that in shutter priority mode if I fixed the ISO and set the shutter high the EV only changed the flash output as the aperture was always wide open. This is the effect I usually want so I was very happy!

Many Thanks,

Ed
