M8 Owners unite

Maybe the suggestion of returning the camera sent the wrong message.

All I am trying to do is "unite" the owners, and future owners, of this camera into one united front with one message.

I think we all agree the camera is currently flawed, and that Leica has agreed to come up with some solutions.

What is wrong with acting as a group with a common message. It would seem to me that Leica would be more interested in hearing from us a group versus hundreds of individuals with differing agendas and expectations.

Let's start this conversation over and try and work together and create strength in numbers.

Ed

Ed--did you ever get the profile to work?

Just curious. I've got a more saturated version that people are going to like even more.

The more I see this, the less convinced I am about filters.

You won't get my M8 returned. It will be a real pity if this affects Leica negatively.

Do I want a fix? Yes. They're going to fix it; I'm pretty sure of that. Can they fix it in software? Yes, I think they can.

So hang in there. Of course, you don't have to believe me ;) If you're that scared, return it now.

Why should the Leica "Fix" cost those who have already bought the camera any extra money?

Why are people still willing to blow $5000.00 on a camera that is not street ready?????

Perhaps what we need is a Leica RECOVERY GROUP. This Leica obsession with the M8 is starting to sound like a cult. A cameras like the M3 earned its reputation, this new kid on the block came broken, and people are still lining up to buy it. Only in the Loco Leica world!

Wilfredo--then you'd need a Canon recovery group, a Nikon recovery group and probably every other pro camer recovery group. How about this?

1) Canon releases 1dm2. Great camera, but C1 profile renders skies as cyan and grass as yellow. People who don't get that the camera has extended DR and don't know how to process detail in mid-highlights think the camera is *mushy* compared with a 20D. Not true, but perception, you know :)

2) Canon releases 1ds2, arguably one of the finest all-round dSLRs on the market. I know there's people who don't believe this here, but that camera rocks. Put a Leica lens on it and you'll know what I mean.

BUT when it was release, it actually scrambled / dropped frames. YIKES. Can you imagine the hand wringing on that?!? Pros with more money than me sold all their Canon gear! But you know what? They fixed it. Took about 6 months, but it was fixed

3) Nikon... well, you get the point. Suffice to say I sold all my Nikon gear and went to Canon after the 5th pro body return :)

Some people do not seem to get it that there are also people who are satisfied or at least can live with the proposed solutions ....

1. The banding issue ..... will be fixed if info is correct

2. IR "issue" (which is not a design fault but a deliberate choice to get the outstanding imaquality with some trade-offs: ok badly communicated and perhaps even kept deliberately under the hood to get people used to the filter idea..... not very elegant ) has several workarounds/ solutions

- non critical colorwork .... different C1 profile .....or filter ... up to you

- critical colorwork .... filter

- B&W ........ fiter or non filter depends on your vision of how you want your B&W to look and how to get there

- IR .... can be used to your advantage

If i sum this up i have the feeling i have a an outstanding and very workable camera in my hands .........

If this is not what you can live with .. simply sent it back or do not order ....

I would order again today if i had knewn all this in advance!

just my 2 cents...

I also feel as though I have been taken advantage of. Fortunately I have friends who share my concern and fear. These friends include all the members of this forum.

Please include me out of this "fear and loathing" line. The way some people are carrying on, you'd think Leica staff had burst into their homes and slaughtered their family.

1. As others have said, there will be a fix. Whether it involves using cut filters is neither confirmed nor refuted at this stage. However, from the standpoint of one who doesn't yet own an M8, but having seen some of the fabulous quality the camera is undoubtedly capable of would definitely be up for joining the club, if that solution involved a reduction of image quality then gimme that box of filters. The hatred that some here seem to feel at the very thought of using a filter on their Leica glass is bizarre. Have they never used a coloured filter for B&W work, or even just a UV for protection.

2. The over-sensitivity to IR is not just confined to the M8. Several Nikon DSLRs, both past and present also display the ''purple shift". See here for an experiment. The point that the poster makes - a little further down the thread - is that in his everyday shooting with the D100 and D2H he never noticed this issue. Its no consolation for the small number whose normal work would expose them to the IR problem, but for the vast majority here the truth is neither would they be likely to see this problem unless they went out looking for it.

No way will you get many people to return their M8. Some people are so brainwahsed into the Leica mentality, because they view it as an extension of their personality, that they would rather shell out big money for a less then perfect Leica rangefinder, then use a digital by another manufacturer.

I did get the profile to work. I downloaded Pro, installed it and am using it unitl it expires. I am assuming that the profile will appear in LE.

The profile does make some significant improvements. The test shot I have has a teal pleece jacket, that is now gray. The profile did resolve that issue. The same with another shot of my daughter with a green shirt. She even notived the color shift.

I would love to try your new profile.

Actually, Steve, many of us--particularly those making a living as photographers--are already using digitals made by other manufacturers. The reason we want the M8 has nothing to do with being brainwashed into the Leica mentality. It is simply that we want our work to have the distinct look that only comes from using Leica M glass. I continue to be surprised by the number of people on this, the LEICA CAMERA USER FORUM, who do not seem to understand that distinction.

The only option currently available to us is the RD-1. That's a fine camera for many purposes, but the file size is too small for the kind of work many of us do. Most of my editors require file sizes quite a bit larger that that provided by the RD-1. The M8 is a practical solution for me and I'm quite willing to wait for Leica to get it right. And they will.

And Steve if this is the case, what according to your "strong psychological profiling qualities" is wrong with that?

please inform me further about the problem I have, I am interested you know.

By the way, do you own an M8?

What a plug for the Cannon :(... I need not recover from this.
