bill Posted August 11, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 11, 2009 Good call, Brian. Thanks for this. It's worth pointing out that this is a nationwide initiative, with most events the previous weekend, which means that the energetic can do one weekend locally, and travel to the big smoke for the second Here's a link to a general site: Heritage Open Days ,,,and this for Guildford: Heritage open days The reason I post the latter is because it is the one I have most experience of. The chained library in the Royal Grammar School, for example, is well worth a visit. Regards, Bill

spylaw4 Posted August 13, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted August 13, 2009 Glad to see that there's life beyond the M25! Only trouble with the London days is that quite a number of the "best/most interesting" places need to be booked for timed tours due to popularity. So unless you log on the minute the online booking opens.... there is the proverbial snowballs chance.
farnz Posted August 20, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 20, 2009 I tried to pre-book Tower 42 on 10th August (the first day it was available for booking). The search function still wouldn't find it up until 10.15, although other venues were available, and I had other things I had to do until 11.00 but when I found it at 11.00 it was completely booked up. Out of sheer annoyance I rang Open House to find out what was going on (because I'd missed out on other venues in each of the preceding 4 years) and was told that Tower 42 came on line at 10.30 and all 40 places were taken by 10.35. I detected a distinct odour of cod. Pete.
spylaw4 Posted August 20, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted August 20, 2009 Although one can understand the building "owners" wanting to place some limit on numbers and times of availability, the ridiculously small number of slots for the more popular ones is really annoying. Hardly worth the effort of opening them at all. Is it a case of who you know? I suggest feed back to Open House re this. It was the same with Centre Point and the Eye., and another that I can't recall the name of.
