cv 15 or cv 21?

I used to own a CV 15mm which I found an excellent super wide for my M8. I sold it when I sold the M8.

Now my widest RF lens for my film bodies is a Leitz Elmarit 21mm f2.8 (pre-asph). A very god lens indeed. But it is a bit bulky and one of the things I like about RFs is the small size. I'm thinking of the CV 21/4, which I have never owned before (but recently took an as yet undeveloped film with), or re-buying the 15. I think I might find 15 a little too wide on 35mm film. Does anyone else use it on film and how do you think it compares to the 21/4?

Thanks

I have the VC 15 and 21, the 21 gets used mostly on the Leica III although it sometimes goes out as a smaller, lighter alternative to the 21 Elmarit aspheric which usually goes with the Ms. The VC 21 is very good, but not as good as the Elmarit. The 15 is obviously 'better' if you want/need the wider angle, but doesn't get so much use for what I do, 21 seems to be enough most of the time, but its down to your individual preferences!

I ended up selling the cv 21, mainly because I couldn't stand the vignetting on slides. I also managed to get my finger in the picture every now and then, because it was already too small to handle for me. I sometimes had to search for the aperture ring and focus too. So "bulky" (in Leica M standards) is not a problem for me. Have to find a substitute, though...

I would add a query to this thread about distortion with cv21 as opposed to Leica 21. The Elmarit, I have read, is relatively distortion free. Is that the case?

I have had a cv 15 for some time now and find the distortion to be really too, too much for many applications. When I use it, the image is really ABOUT the distortion.

Any comments? Thanks, in advance.

The 15 is dramatically wide and can bring with it all sorts of strange effects - elongated faces at the edge of the shot etc. I'm not sure that its technically distortion - simply that closer objects are larger than farther away ones. It is possible to avoid these characteristics by careful positioning and thinking about the image before taking it. It's a lot of fun and I use mine a lot more than I thought I would.

I have the C.V. SWH 4,5/15mm MKII and use it on my M7. It's very wide (110' ) and therefore for architecture and special effects on models.

The next lens is the Elmarit 2,8/28mm so maybe a 21mm could fill in the gap.

I am also using the C.V. 15mm on my Olympus PEN E-P1 and for the MFT system it's a 30mm lens.

Thanks for the replies

The CV 15 I was looking to buy 2nd hand got sold, and I think I can get the CV 21 from a relative for free. Plus my own previous experience with the 15 was that I rarely used it as it was so wide. So I think that has solved that.

Interested what is said about vignetting/distortion. I have read good things about the CV 21 elsewhere. As I mentioned I do have the Elmarit 21mm f2.8 pre-asph. It is a lovely lens with little or not distortion and great resolution. However it is bg and heavy, and for travel I fancied the size of the CV/21. I don't expect the same quality (for a quarter of the price) but using it outdoors at f5.6-f16 I am hoping it should be pretty good.
