M8 faulty battery and/or charger

The battery doesn't charge? Tell me it ain't so. And are you sure non-Leica lenses don't meter? I can't see any reason why they shouldn't. Metering happens TTL and on the shutter, according to the aperture selected, right? Nothing electronic there, at least until the light hits the metering band. I've had CV lenses with an M6 and they metered all right. And they never said that coding was mandatory for metering.

Yes, I got that far too. Running a few tests, however, basic question: is the 12 in the viewfinder an error code. Anyone else with these issues? At least the battery charges....

edit for update: I had a full charge, with the new charger/battery, then had 60 shots before the battery ran empty, charged a depleted battery: charging stops, I insert the battery into the camera: indicator says: empty.

Now I'm back to the same issue with battery and charger no1. What am I doing wrong? The manual says there is a pulse charge for depleted batteries, with a flashing yellow light? I'm not seeing it...

In the manual, they cite a few lens models that don't allow metering....

Are you sure of that. Where in the manual did you find this? What I know is that they list lenses you can't use because they go too deep into the body and will damage the sensor if forced in, like Hologon 15, or some retractable lenses, like the older Elmar 90/4. But metering?

they cite older elmarit 28mm models, amongst others. must be about obscuring the white metering band on the shutter.

so anyone know what error #12 means? If it is an error code....

Not sure if this is he same thing... I can get mine to have the number 12, when shutter speed is set to "A" and you don't have enough light... Thanks Jim

I would remount the appropriate plug adapter on to the unit, in case something didn't connect right. Also try plugging the charger into another outlet in case there happens to be a ground fault or something with the outlet you are useing. When you put the battery in the lights should come on stead and the orange one go out after 2-3 hours. Deplete the battery in camera before recharging. It should take about 3 full cycles before you get full useage out of the battery.

Alex:

Can't figure out your battery problem -- haven't had any problems with mine.

My 15mm f4.5 Super -Wide Heliar meters just fine. No issue here -- just make sure to work the aperture back and forth. I won't touch the lens cap issue (LOL).

My 21mm f3.4 Super Angulon fits the M8, but will not meter, just as the manual states. But it won't meter on any M camera, because the rear element protrudes too far back into the camera body.

Other than the 1st version 28mm Elmarit (same issue as the 21mm SA), I don't know of any other Leica lenses that you can mount, that won't meter.

doubtlessly - but not in this case.

getting a bit cranky because of the "Leica experience"

Sorry, but it has happened a few times when people got the M7.

Here is another stupid question, but is there a SD card in the Camera and is it an SD card on the approved list?

I suggest you call Leica and see what they say if you cannot otherwise figure it out.
