vmlopes Posted August 5, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Simple question which one to compliment my M4, needs to be digital and fairly simple to operate on the occasion that SWMBO uses it, so a simple automatic mode is good, she has manged to shoot with my Canon 40D with grip so size is not a real issue........full manaul mode a must when I use it. Reasonable ISO performance would also be good. Can get a secondhand Digilux 3, for the same price as the DL4 once you add a grip, extra battery, memory card etc. on....... Is one any better than the other though.............your thoughts appreciated.

Depending on *comparable* situations, which also includes what you do with your pictures, with both cameras you can of course get good results. What is different is their use. Guess a DL-4 would, more or less, just overlap in digital what I expect you can do with your M4, while a DSLR would greatly extend your use with the added versatility it can offer. So, if we are to be bound to the only choices you present and that you say size is not a deal-breaker, my vote clearly goes to the Digilux-3 for the more options it would open and for the traditional command layout, something that would certainly make an M4 user "feeling at home" when switching cameras. Best of luck.
lkfosterl Posted August 5, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 5, 2009 I have both and at the moment I prefer the DL4. The main reason is that it's far more portable, so I'm more likely to have it with me than the Digilux 3. It's easy to put in a pocket. Picture quality is better with the larger camera, but that doesn't matter if you don't have it with you.
chkphoto Posted August 6, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 6, 2009 I have both cameras and I prefer and use most often the Digilux3. I like its heft and mass, its hand hold-ability. And for its sensor size its image quality is amazingly good. I like that I can put on a macro or a tele when I need it. I have a small Domke bag that just holds the camera with an attached lens, a filter, extra cards and battery - that's it. This makes it very portable and protected. I don't use a camera strap and I can use it as quickly as I do the DL4. I thought I would always just bring the DL4 but it hasn't worked out that way. denniswksit Posted August 6, 2009 Share #6 Posted August 6, 2009 I vote for Digilux 3 for it is a DSLR, instead of a DC like DL4.
