I have a Leica Digilux 2 camera, it has been working fine shot about 1000 images since I bought it used. Turned it on & all I get is a memory card error with the card I have been using & 3 new ones. The camera powers up fine w/out a card, as soo as the card goes in them I get the error. It will not let me reformat any card in the camera. I have reformated the card in another computer & camera & they work fine. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Please let me know. Thank's Kevin

I remember the D/2 of a friend had been showing this issue a few times, but randomly, before the sensor failed on him. Since it came back with the new sensor it never had that problem again. I won't say the two are related, but just they were solved together (and for free).

If you cannot recover from this error, and given the same cards had been working on it in the past and still are on other cameras, I'm sorry to say that maybe Solms is the only way to go ...

With all my sympathy.

Just as an update ...

In the M8 sub-forum there's currently a thread by a user [Mauribix] complaining with the same problem but on an M8, and claiming he found a solution to his problem.

In short he first formatted the cards on his computer to a different file system (SD cards are usually formatted in FAT/FAT32, so NTFS or a Mac/Linux one would do), and then he formatted them again in the camera, thus making it to completely rewrite *all* the low level info to the card.

I really don't know if this is can be applied to your case but guess it's worth a try anyway before shipping the camera ....

See his longest post in the second half of this page:

It would be quite interesting to know if this worked, so if you have a try I'd be real grateful if you let us know the result.

Best of luck.

I let the camera sit 24hrs it did not clear anything so I could reformat the cards. I did format them in the computer, but as soon as it tries to read them I get the error even with a new card. I was told I might have to wait 48hrs to clear the cameras internal memory first. Does that sound correct? Then I will try and format in the camera. I did remember I left the camera on over 24hrs in standby mode that should not have hurt anything do ya think? Thank's

Reformated the cards in the computer, also let it sit 3 days with out battery in to try and clear the camera memory. It did not clear the date & time memory & there still is the memory card error. The camera is being shipped off to Leica USA on Monday. I will let you all know what Leica says. Hope they will upgrade the sensor at the same time. They said they only do that upgrade if its a sensor problem, they dont just replace sensors unless they fail. Now that I have used the Digilux 2 for a week I will have to go back to my M# for a few weeks. Kevin

Kevin,

thanks for the update and sorry the "M8 cure" didn't work, it was worth a try anyway.

Hope they will return your D/2 as soon as possible ... and be gentle on your wallet.

Best of luck.

Go the bad news back for Leica USA today. $375.00 for a new circuit board, the memory error problem was from the bad board. Leica is also upgrading the sensor & said they are bring the camera up to current standards. Kind of expensive as I have not even had the camera one month and only 1000 images or so. Hope no one else has the same problem. Thank's for all your answers.

Sorry for the bad news, guess that if the sensor failed first they would have also changed the circuit board maybe, who knows.

Tough decision, only alternative would be new parts and a new (one year??) warranty vs another D/2. If I'm not wrong some time ago PopFlash had been selling a few refurbished ones for around the $600 figure (but they have none on list at the moment), so, in this case anyway, the repair would sound significantly cheaper.

All the best.

Paid $650.00 for the camera, but the good thing is I will know now what I have with a new board & ccd installed. Leica will warranty the board for a year. Total cost for the one month old Digilux-2 $1015.00us. Kinda stuck with this deal. Guess I will sell My M2 to pay for it, that I just got back from a full CLA.

  • 4 weeks later...

Got my camera back from Leica USA last night. Everything works like new. They put a new circuit board in to take care of the memory card error problem. While it was there Leica upgraded the CCD sensor at the same time under warranty. This repair set me back $387.00, on top of the $650.00 I paid for the camera 2 months ago. Not the best deal for me, but now I have a like new 4 yr old Leica. I will start shooting photos today.

not the best of deals maybe, but you will soon forget about the money enjoying its use and results.

If you let me just one suggestion, check if the sensor is clean from dust, f/11+auto against a white sheet of paper will do it. They drove me crazy on that with mines.

Looking forward to seeing some of your pics maybe.

... How can there be dust get on the sensors?

Because judging from my experience, (and of some others I read about), they do not work in what is called a "clean room", otherwise this would not happen.

In the 2nd half of 2007 'till late spring of 2008, two of my D/2's made a round-trip to Solms an unbelievable number of times, without them being able to solve the problem.

Anyway do not worry, just check yours, and let's hope for the best.
