I returned a black M8 to Popflash. Check with Tony.

And I totally agree with you, if what you mean is 'Photographers who know what they are doing and can see very quickly that they should avoid any high ISO situations with bright lights of any sort, or any situation where people in the picture may be wearing black clothing with tacky synthetic fibers, and are basically cool with a $5000 camera that imposes these limitations."

If you don't want one, that's entirely up to you. But why do you find it necessary to try to dissuade someone who wants to get one knowing full well what the issues are? I don't get that.

I still have a place in line i think. i just need the one i have for now, go for it. Tell Sean to call me if he needs me. Trust me he has my number, bought many things from him.

I'm actually still next in line for one from a dealer in Germany, but my fear is that they have stopped shipping.

A couple of people have reported they have stopped shipping in Switzerland and Germany, so my guess is no more out of the factory for the moment. That may well just be precautionary, more telling would be whether they've stopped making them. Hopefully, by the end of next week, the future direction will be clearer.

More likely they are holding back waiting for some new literature about IR sensitivity to come back from the printers and be placed into the box (something like the current lens compatibility leaflet). Perhaps there will also be a voucher for a new Leica IR filter or two. Unless they are going to halt production for a number of months I can't see Leica stopping so as to incorporate any meaningful hardware changes.

Try and see if Tony Rose still has any of the ones that were sent back to him. POPFLASH.COM - Cameras & Photographic Equipment

Good luck,

Sean

I'm already in line for one of the returns. Okay, call me nuts but I do have a few crazy reasons for doing this:

1) I'm willing to work with the filters... I think the results look great.

2) I'm betting that they'll come up with an in-camera solution, in which case I'll send it in and get it repaired/replaced. I'm also betting that they'll give the early cameras priority over the people still waiting in line.

3) If Leica goes under, the camera will be worth a crapload of dough.

4) I need to buy a digital camera to justify the purchase of a Mac Pro and 30" cinema display.

And here's Tony's response: "For every M8 that is returned, we have 61 orders waiting to fill."

Here's the latest update on availability, just sent to me by a friend in Europe:

"In the German forum there's a post by Andreas Zinner (http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digitalforum/9229-m8-banding-probleme-hardware-bedingt.html)

who wrote a Leica collaborator whom he met yesterday at a presentation of the M8 in Darmstadt said the problems with the M8 are basically hardware-related and that it would take Leica 10-12 weeks to solve it.

The statement is confirmed two other German forum members who say they also attented this presentation.

One of them mentions the chief of Leica's product management, Stefan Daniel, as the source of the info."

Those of you fortunate enough to have one of the few early versions may well have a limited edition, highly collectible digital camera--especially if future editions end up sacrificing image sharpness to solve other problems.

Looks like it's more than a firmware tweak, and, as to be expected, Leica are taking it very seriously. I suspect this info (and some) will comprise some of the update Leica promised us within the 2 week timesale from their announcement on this forum.

It would be extremely interesting to see if there's any adverse effect on image quality when this rumored hardware fix takes place. It may partially answer the question why Leica didn't implement the "fix" in the first place suppose they were aware of the issues in the engineering process.

Can someone who owns two M8s do such a comparison test when that happens?

That's a good one, Victor ... :D I'm also going to keep the November issue of Asahi Camera magazine, it may very well be the world's only magazine which has the magenta cast pictures exclusively featured in history.

Yes, Victor, but we need to know if you ever slept with it. Let's see, 15,000 euro--that's about $US 250, correct?
