So...M9's not here yet, and we're already speculating on how low prices will go on existing gear. Is this because we're worried that the prices on our existing gear will fall?

In the comic strip "Pogo" by Walt Kelly, in US papers for many years, the character Albert the Alligator once said: "We have met the enemy, and he is us."

When the M9 appears, the price for the M8 will go up or stabilize, because interest in the M cameras will go up. Lens prices, of course, will also jump, though some will jump more than others (I'd be getting 50s and 35s now if I were a betting man :))

Many of us would buy an M8 backup if the price dropped. I've never seen a used M8 at $2000 yet (though I'm sure there are a few).

Actually, I agree with Jamie. While there may be some initial dip, I suspect prices of the M8 will dip but then stabilize [say, at around 1800- or so, US], as many trade/sell their M8's to finance purchases of FF bodies, and others take advantage of the bargain. On the other hand, I've just been browsing photos posted by many who frequent this site, and clearly, while not without its problems, the M8 remains a capable platform for these great lenses. It will continue to be capable of some stunning photos in the hands of those who use the RF system to its potential, and because of its strengths.

Norm,

I tend to agree with you and Jamie, the M8 IS a competent photographic tool, it will continue to deliver images even when a M9 hits the market.

Actually I was just printing two images today, one from 645 film and one from the M8, both to 13x19... Im still sitting here and puzzling over the result. the 645 did not trump the 10meg M8 as hands down as I had expected.. hmmm. guess I can live with that. (maybe I need to rescan the negative)

You will be right about the (2nd hand) lenses and accessories will become more expensive. You might find second hand UVIR-filters for a fraction of the current prices, though.

Buy the new M9 autofocus lenses instead. They will be a better investment. Putting more money into a declining asset is not a good choice.

I am sorry to offend, but this is the most unreal post I ever read on the internet.

M9 af lenses?

M8 an asset? You seem to forget that someone who buys an M8 will use it, therefore expecting a depreciation... and there is a price to be paid for personal enjoyment. Not every camera that one buys has to be reslod with a profit.

The M8 camera is pretty much flawed. Its shutter is slouchy and gives a bad feeling overall. The M8.2 is entirely different and deserves the "M" badge. I will jump all over a M8.2 but won't touch the M8 with a stick.

I've seen used M8s on ebay going for less than $2,000. If an M9 comes to the market the M8 will be lucky to sell for $1,500 and the M8.2 for under $2,500.

PM me when you see one of these eh John? I never see bargains like you do apparently, and I'm considering a second body.

Oh and the autofocus M-lenses - good luck with those.

I've seen M8's going on E-bay for $2700. Any idea what a used M8.2 will be worth once the M9 comes into the picture? I suspect the M8 will drop below $2500.00.

This very much depends on the price level of any M9. Why shouldn't Leica keep the M8.2 as entry level M-camera very much like C and N who are still selling crop cameras?

I already can hear the price moaning. Buy a tissue be prepared to wipe off your tears.

Regards

Steve

Wilfredo, I saw some selling for 2000 euros here. I suspect that the moment the M9 will hit the market our M8 value will be the same as the DLux 4...

But I don't mind, mine is perfect and I have no money for an M9, so I will keep on shooting my great camera and happy with that.

Sometime I really wonder... I've even read a few times that the M8.2 has better quality output than the M8. It's fascinating how people will struggle desperately to find 'class differences' between objects (or other people).

Anyone else think the M8.2 is "entirely different"? I tested side-by-side, and felt the difference in the shutter was negligible.

And of course, the M8.2 is less flexible for a Noctilux and Summilux 21 shooter.

I think you greatly underestimate the demand for the M8 from M users. At euros 2000€+, it is still way too much of an investment for many. The M9 does not change anything to that as it will be above €5000. But when the M8 drifts to the €1500 range, demand will step in (back up bodies, switch to M digital...), I don't think it will go below that point for a long time. Look at the R-D1, I almost sold it a month ago (I changed my opinion last minute) for €1200.

Therefore I think the M8 won't go below for €1500 at least for the next 24 months. Despite its flaws, it takes amazing pictures and still will in two years. The M9 will be an improvement but at a price prohibitive to many M users.

Yanidel, I suppose you're right. As a matter of fact when the M9 will hit the market and the M8 price will drop, many people will have the chance to switch to digital.

Maybe that will be the time I will buy a backup M8 body...
