I heard some people file off the selector tab of the Nokton so it brings up the 35mm lines. How accurate is this actually on the M8 (which isn't accurate anyway). Has anyone tried? epand56 Posted July 30, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 30, 2009 Hello Mikki, I used to have the Nokton 40/1.4, but I have to say I've sold it after buying a Summicron-C 40/2 that in spite of being a little less fast is IMO sharper and quite superior in the way it renders the image (I'm sure there is somebody out there that totally prefer the Nokton, it is a matter of taste). This said, I did not file neither the Nokton nor the Summicron. If you use the 50 framelines, you know that you will get something more than what you see. You can push the lever before shooting and you'll get the 35 brightlines and then you will get something less than what you see. After shooting with the 40mm for a while, you tend to learn how the image will be without taking care whether you have the 50 or the 35 bright lines. The 40mm (Nokton or Summicron) It is a great lens on the M8, IMO, it gives you the same feeling of a 50 on a FF camera, better than the 35. If you want to buy the Nokton, however, I suggest you to try it first, if you have the chance, since it is prone to some weird behaviour such like front or back focus. You can only check the very interesting review about the Nokton 40 on Sean Reid website. http://www.reidreviews.com The subscription will cost you a small amout of money against a huge amount of interesting informations. (Sean is not my brother or partner or anything else but, i hope, a friend...) Never had the 35/1.4, so I can't say about that. QDIEM4SC Posted July 31, 2009 Share #5 Posted July 31, 2009 I used to own the Nokton 40 and only sold it because I ended up purchasing the 50 'lux asph. I agree with what's been stated above regarding the frame lines--it's really a non-issue. And 40 mm is an interesting length, as depending on whether you take a few steps forward or a few steps back, it can behave as a 50mm or 35mm lens. It's very versatile. It's also very well-built and very compact--almost exactly the same size and weight as the Elmarit 28. It takes a 43mm filter size, which is not as common as some of the others. Of note, the thread lines of the lens will accept the Leica 43 IR filter. How does it perform? I found it a touch soft at f/1.4 and f/1.8 (but that's only because I prefer super-sharp performance at wide apertures), but it had a very pleasing look nonetheless that was perfect for portraiture. At f/2 onwards, it performed beautifully. So, I often thought of it as an f/2 lens that, when necessary,could perform well at f/1.4. In many ways, I miss it, because it had a lot of goodness wrapped in a very small package. Thanks in advance Mikki, I have here two more pictures taken with the Cosina Voigländer Nokton 35/1.4. I have included the full picture and a crop at 100% on the focusing area. In both pictures, the focus is on the eyes. I haven't used much this lens since I bought it last year. I've been testing it this summer during a trip to Bilbao (Spain... or should I say Basque Country?) to see my dad. You should also consider the CV Nokton 35/1.2 ASPH. It is a great lens but bulkier but you gain half extra stop. Now concerning the pictures: Both pictures were taken with the Nokton 35/1.4in a dark street a few minutes before 8:00PM at ISO 160 The first one it has been taken at f/1.4 and 1/90. The second one at f/2.0 and 1/45. You can read the EXIF on the full picture. Cropped images have no EXIF.I created new images (960x960) on Photoshop CS4 with the cropped area of the original picture. As you can see, this lens can be so sharp... I wouldn't take a portrait of my mother in law with it! Welcome, dear visitor!
