I'm leaving for a prolonged vacation tomorrow. My first packing decision was whether to bring both the leica system and D3 system, answer....Leica only. I am very lucky to have 2 M8 bodies, as well as 2 M7 bodies (0.72 and 0.85 finder). My bag can hold 3 bodies and 5 lenses, (with a lens on 2 bodies). I went with the 2 M7 bodies, 20 rolls of XP2, and one M8 body. I packed 75 lux and 90 cron for the 0.85 finder, a 50 lux asph for the 0.72 finder, and a 24 elmarit and 35 lux asph for the M8 (they'll find their way to the film bodies also). Up until 4 years ago I only shot with DSLRs, and till 2 years ago, I never shot film. The M8 led me to RF photography, and then to the M7, and now I find I just prefer M7 shooting enough to find myself going more with film than the M8, and RF shooting so much more as to leave the D3 home. That's a really big change for me, and packing made it clearer to me where my photographic heart now resides. best....Peter

Do you really need or want to carry around 3 bodies and 5 lenses?

Still a month until my long holiday and I have been doing the gear combinations and permutations in my mind for weeks.

I am leaning toward less rather than more. MP, 50lux, 35cron, 28 ultron and the LX3 in the capable hands of my wife.

I am so glad that I don't have all that amount of stuff to worry about. 2 M6's and 3 lenses and 2 speeds of B&W film stock and thats me. Basically the whole concept of rangefinder photography is that Less is more. Keep it simple and leave room to experience

No worries, rather a pleasure to use them in the situations they do best in.
I would suggest that your original post was a touch boastful as opposed to a genuine request for guidance from others with a vast knowledge on the topic of traveling with a camera. Interestingly H. Cartier- Bresson managed to travel the world with one camera and one lens which obviously left him free from clutter to concentrate on making iconic images- Have a good trip

I recently climbed Mt. Fuji for the first time last week specifically to photograph the eclipse. Needless to say, packing light was essential.

I considered taking my Leica R gear or Nikon gear, but finally settled on my M bodies and lenses because of their compactness. I worried a bit about limiting myself for focal lengths, but using the Ms turned out to be an excellent decision.

The 8 rolls of Kodachrome I shot should be back from the lab next week.

I'm down to 2 bodies and 3 lenses; 0.72x & 0.85x mag MPs, 35/1.4 & 75/2 on the bodies, 24/2.8 for when needed. Everything fits into a Domke F-803 type small satchel. [/b]

I'm with peter_n on this one. I go with 2 M6TTL's (.72 & .85) 1 loaded w/HP5 the other with Kodachrome/Portra/Fuji NP* depending. Combo of 25/35/75 lenses and it all easily fits in an 803...For me it's the perfect travel kit.

By way of replying to a few comments -

After posting I was concerned that my intent could easily have been understood as "boasting" which is not at all what I wanted to do. I also wasn't asking for advice. I simply was sharing with my film shooting peers that when I quickly packed for a month long vacation I found myself taking 2 film bodies and 1 digital. This kind of surprised me, I "discovered" how important the film process has become to me. I listed the lenses to show my thinking in bringing both the 0.72 and 0.85 M7 bodies. I go out with 2 bodies typically, with either a 35 or 50 on one, and a 75 or 90 on the other. Again this was just sharing my journey from only digital shooting to mostly film, that's all the packing "proved". I'm enjoying the journey very much. Best..... Peter

I am sort of the opposite. The thing I love about RF is their compact nature so taking lots of bodies and lenses sort of kills it for me.

My vacation kit:

M7 with 50 'cron, loaded with either Ilford Delta 100 (if sunny place) or TriX (if clouds are likely)

Bessa R with CV 35mm "Color Skopar" loaded with Neopan 1600.

I carry the M during the day and the Bessa in the evening.

That's enough for me, but takes all sorts, so whatever you enjoy shooting is really the correct kit.
