john_newell Posted July 26, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I found a strap set in the bottom of one of my boxes. Plastic bag says 14130. Contents: olive drab leather strap, matching plastic shoulder pad, and two beatiful old-style silver chrome strap rings with 1/4-20 tripod screw knobs. Looks like one end would attach to a heavy lens and the other to the camera. Has anyone used one of these? Is it comfortable? I often wind up carrying a couple of bodies with heavy lenses attached and I was wondering whether this would be an improvement (or not) over the camera strap attached to the lugs on the camera body. If it isn't comfortable in practice, any idea about whether it's got any collector value??? Thanks...

Thanks... 14130 = "heavy duty carrying strap" ... but if it's olive it might be from a military outfit and if so could command a premium price ... but would be offered so seldom that ascertaining a guide price is not possible . Military "M'" cameras and outfits have sold for very high prices at auction recently. But TTBOMK individual accessories have not been offered. This is a standard olive military "M" camera strap Cheers dunk
ismon Posted July 27, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 27, 2009 Yes, the 14,130 is quite handy, for the right equipment. When used with something heavy, like a Leicaflex with a 180 or 250, it is quick and comfortable. One chrome fitting mounts to the lens, the other to the camera body. The fittings "ride" along the length of the strap, so when it's worn over one shoulder, the camera can quickly be brought up to eye level to shoot--then dropped out of the way without interfering with the camera around your neck. Very handy in an age before zooms. It can be a little cumbersome if you change lenses frequently, since camera and lens are tethered together. jaapv Posted July 28, 2009 Share #4 Posted July 28, 2009 Didn't it come with the R3 Safari set?
john_newell Posted July 29, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted July 29, 2009 This one I've got looks like it would be late 1960s/early 1970s, so pre-R3. (It's not dated, so that's obviously a guess.) I have othe old Leitz leather with the same OD finish. I don't know whether it's military or just what they were doing.
mooky Posted July 29, 2009 Share #6 Posted July 29, 2009 Well if it has two 1/4x20 screw knobs, it's probably the same one I use with my SL2 mot with Motor attached. One screw for the motor front and the other for the motor bottom. I'm still using it and I have been wondering just how I can find another. It's great with some of the medium/long lenses, including the 400 6.8 Telyt. But I just like it for the comfort and security with my normal outfit - SL2mot/Motor and 35 2.8 Elmarit, and the camera hangs upside down.......it works perfectly for me and always reminds me of how nicely, and simply, the SL system was...and still is. (Just make a digital body in the same package!!!)
john_newell Posted July 29, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted July 29, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am a little unclear on whether these are scarce or not? Check this link for both description and price: Products Collectcamera
mooky Posted July 30, 2009 Share #8 Posted July 30, 2009 John, they are uncommon at best; I have not found anyone with any (meaning Leica dealers) but I can't say that they are in demand either, as it was a pretty specialized item. Let me know if you want to sell. (can I say that on the site?)
john_newell Posted July 30, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted July 30, 2009 One of the qeustions that had been rolling around in the back of my mind was dating, since this is in a ziploc bag. I don't know when Leitz started using ziploc bags, but they apparently came on the market in 1968. That squares with my personal memory, because I remember my mother bringing home a Scrabble game in 1968 or 1969 and it had some of the pieces in a ziploc bag. It is memorable because I tore it open and my mother expressed her dismay at my needlessly ruining the resealable bag!
mooky Posted July 30, 2009 Share #10 Posted July 30, 2009 John, as far as I know, Leica has never used zip-lock bags for new items. At least, in all the years I have been using and selling Leica products all the bags have been sealed.
ismon Posted July 30, 2009 Share #11 Posted July 30, 2009 The 14,130 was introduced in 1966.
john_newell Posted July 30, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted July 30, 2009 John, as far as I know, Leica has never used zip-lock bags for new items. At least, in all the years I have been using and selling Leica products all the bags have been sealed. Interesting; I have gotten a variety of things from Leitz (maybe never Leica? not sure) in ziplock bags over the years. I will post a picture. This bag is very definitely an E. Leitz bag. It has the corporate name/address and all kinds of instructions in German printed on it, worn but still very legible.
mooky Posted July 31, 2009 Share #13 Posted July 31, 2009 Oh well, goes to show there are exceptions for everything. I still can't recall a zip-lock, even in my collection of boxes, etc. I have found out that the older boxes with the soft liners should be kept open as the spongy foam starts to disintegrate; so now I have boxes with no liners - not exactly collector worthy any longer.
