super7668 Posted July 25, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 25, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does M8 require special shutter release cable? Or just any standard one? Sorry, I never use this before, have no idea at all. Saw some mentioned only for certain model of Canon, and some for Nikon, just confused. I thought all mechanical one should work... Thanks. doubice Posted July 25, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 25, 2009 Any old cable release will do. Best, Jan
Guest WPalank Posted July 25, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 25, 2009 Not sure. But if it looks like it was made somewhere around the 1920's, that's the correct one.
super7668 Posted July 26, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted July 26, 2009 What? So I can't use this one? Set of 2 locking Remote Cable Shutter Release 40" 16" - eBay (item 200281745562 end time Jul-26-09 16:40:56 PDT) What's the difference with this Leica one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260449515327&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp3907.m38.l1313%26_nkw%3D260449515327%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1#ht_732wt_1167
doubice Posted July 26, 2009 Share #5 Posted July 26, 2009 The 'jinfinance' release, as well as the 'Leica' one have a decades old standard thread and both will work. There is nothing special about the 'Leica' release - the seller is just using Nikon and Leica key words to attract more hits to his auction. It is not a 'Leica' release, just a regular cable release made in Germany by any one of many accessory manufacturers (HAMA, ROWI, Prontor etc.). Best, Jan

Shootist Posted July 26, 2009 Share #7 Posted July 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just go to your local photo store and buy a standard, older style that was used on cameras from around 1954 until the late 80's or longer, cable release. No need to order one from china (although the one you buy in your local camera store might be made in china).

Let me know if you need more assurances as to the compatibility of your M8 with the cable releases in question. I will have my lawyer prepare a full disclosure statement and we'll have it courriered to you. If you need the cable release for tonight's 'Symphony of Fire' fireworks, it may be a little too late, unfortunately...... Best, Jan

Best, Jan I really have no idea about the cable since I never use one, they all looks similar to me; and seems google can't help. The problem already solved. Luckily I need the cable for next week's fireworks.
Marquinius Posted July 27, 2009 Share #10 Posted July 27, 2009 Bought a standard one at the local shop for a couple of euros and works fine. Plain and simple cable with a spring and pin pushing into the hole in your M8 (or whatever other old fashioned camera).
ljclark Posted July 27, 2009 Share #11 Posted July 27, 2009 Just about any mechanical cable release, as long as it has the tapered thread, and not the older straight thread. However... Give it a check to make sure the action is smooth. Some cable releases are draggy and/or rough. Test a cable by making a single loop for shorter releases, or two complete loops for longer ones and then activating the plunger. With a good cable release you should not notice a significant change in drag. For a locking release, consider how the locking mechanism works. The disc/collar type always seems to deploy when I don't want it to. And they seem to require (at least for me) more fiddling to get released. I prefer the actual screw locks. I've had a Linhof release for about 20 years. Wonderfully well made. It is longer than most, but I've found the length to work out well in the field. kalina Posted July 27, 2009 Share #12 Posted July 27, 2009 I agree that any cable release will work, but the cheapies will feel gritty when you press them. My Hasselblad cable release, however, feels nice and smooth and perfect for the M8.
scaryink Posted July 27, 2009 Share #13 Posted July 27, 2009 I often use an air bulb release. You can be very far from the kit to activate it. I think mine is something like 35 feet or so.

The problem already solved. Luckily I need the cable for next week's fireworks. If you use the M8 on a tripod instead of using a cable you could also consider the 2s autotimer (this also works for B mode) a second very light touch of the shutter release then ends the exposure. This is so light that it should not cause any camera shake.
karl101 Posted July 27, 2009 Share #15 Posted July 27, 2009 The cable release I use has a tapered screw thread. The man in the shop said it was a standard. I have two, I found the posher one with the finger grips, a bit like a syringe, is easier to use. Just ordered the Air Release Bulb from here: http://www.srb-griturn.com/shutter-releases-246-c.asp Karl

ArtZ Posted July 27, 2009 Share #17 Posted July 27, 2009 In my M8s, I would use only a gold or platinium cable with some precious stones (diamonds would do it)
