I couldn't find any information here --I understand that, unlike the Summicron 75/2 which has a built-in lens hood, the 75/2.5 has no hood. However, according to the Leica site for this lens there is a hood "available as an accessory".

Does anyone have more information here about this product? In addition to Leica, are there any other products that anyone would recommend?

Thanks in advance.

This hood (ref.12460) is for sale new @ 80euro (114$US)

That makes the 75/2.5 @1960$

I did bought a Summicron 75Asph second hand (but like new) for ~300$ more than that...

The lens is sold without a hood. A threaded ring protects the external screw thread for the cylindrical hood, which is affixed to the lens mount itself, not to the filter thread (or the forward thread of a filter). In other words, the filter lives *inside* the hood, not 'behind' it. The hood, which is also used for the 90mm Summarit, is sold separately.

The 75mm Summarit is very resistant to flare and reflexes, and I have sometimes used it without a hood. I do still recommend the Leica hood (which has its own front cap, as the front diameter of the hood is greater than that of the lens mount). You can of course use any generic screw-in hood with a M46 x 0.75mm thread, but then you have no front cap.

This lens is very good indeed and to a very great extent a match for the Summicron. I like it a lot. For me, 75mm is exclusively a M8 (cropped-format) lens. I would not dream of investing long term in a Summicron for that purpose. And don't let anybody tell you that Summarit lenses are 'lesser' or even 'inferior' lenses for dumb beginners. They are extremely good both optically and mechanically -- and after more than half a century behind various cameras, I am not a dumb beginner, either.

Yes, is an addon to pay for, and when I bought my Summarit 75 my dealer hadn't it, wasn't at all confident on when the Italian importer would have delivered one, so I ended up with ordering it abroad via the Net. A well done item, as Lars says, for an excellent lens; only "defect" is that keeping it permanently on the lens adds a significant length to the Summarit, making is less "pocketable"; anyway, renouncing to an embedded-extensible hood is probably one of the main factors that keep the Summarits cost reasonably low... other mech details are absolutely up to Leica standard, and optic is superb.

I appreciate your help and information.

For your information I had a Summicron 75 and essentially "traded down" to the new Elmarit 75. I prefer the Elmarit --not only is it less money but I like a slightly more contrasty lens, especially when shooting digitally and in color. The marginal difference in aperature was virtually meaningless (given that I can manipulate ISO more on a digital camera) and the minor difference in brokeh doesn't matter to me at 75mm.

Thanks again,

Michael
