Can someone tell me the difference between the AF and AF macro mode in digilux2?

I just received my d-2 from ebay and the AF mode dial is a bit doggy - when it clicks to AF and the screen is still displaying MF and I have to twist it a bit anti-clockwise to make it display AF on the screen. However the pictures is slightly out of focus.

I can turn the dial to AFMacro and it locks there and seems that the focus are right on.

I know that the AF mode is 60cm to infinite and the AFMacro is 30cm to infinite.

Can I have the AFMacro selected all the time for all situtions? Why there is 2 settings for AF as the AFmacro already has a longer focusing range?

Thanks

Digilux 2 focus/aperture dials sense their position via variable resistors (sliding type), therefore it is possible that they get out of calibration or they may move sideways so all values will shift.

In your case it sounds like there is a shift, so in AF mode the camera still thinks it is at infinity and AF-Macro mode the camera thinks it is in AF mode. I assume that you don't see the AF-Macro mode icon on your screen (the flower icon). If so, you won't be able to focus at near objects without using the MF mode.

A visit to service centre will fix this easily. Or if you are DIY person, you may try disassembling the camera and moving the variable resistor assembly a little bit (I did it myself for a faulty aperture ring, it worked!).

Cheers,

K.

Yes, you can use the macro AF setting all the time. As I understand it, the reason for having two settings is to reduce the amount of time required to focus the lens. This is because focusing at macro distances requires the movable lens elements to travel a greater distance than they do when focusing at non-macro distances. Thus by limiting the range over which the elements travel as the camera tries to focus, the camera can determine optimal focus more quickly.

The AF mode provides rapid focusing from 60cm to infinity. The AF Macro setting provides auto focus across the camera's entire focus range from 30cm to infinity.

Since most shooting situations are at a greater distance than 60cm, AF allows the camera to focus quicker by limiting the range it will hunt. Probably a little bit easier on your battery-life too.

Thank you for the replies.

Koray:

I can see the "flower" icon. It's only at AF mode the dial can move easily about 1mm anti-clockwise and cannot move any further showing "MF" while the dial is still locked to "AF" mode.

I am not a handy man so I won't pull the lens out to fix it....
