Cirrus1 Posted July 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know.... weird sounding title, but I just bought a used Digilux 2 online and it arrived today. It has an odor of stale cigarette smoke. I wiped it down with lens cleaner but it still smells. I am thinking of using rubbing alcohol now but I am worried about damaging anything. It will be heading to Leica for a new sensor and service next week and I'd like to remove as much smell as I can before it goes. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks in advance. Regards, John

lykaman Posted July 24, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 24, 2009 Pop it in a plastic bag with some POTPOURRI->ideally wrap the PotP" in a sock to eliminate the particles getting into the camera..L
doubice Posted July 24, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 24, 2009 John, Don't use any alcohol based liquids - may damage the plastic. Soap and water works wonders, of course be careful with how much moisture you use. Dip an old toothbrush into some soapy water, drain a lot of the liquid from the bristles to almost make the brush semi-dry and brush away. Wipe off with a clean cloth. This has worked for me on many cameras that when received, looked as if pulled out of a hungry dog's mouth. Good luck, Jan
Cirrus1 Posted July 25, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted July 25, 2009 Thanks doubice for the heads up on the alcohol. I took your advise and used a damp spoonge with a little soap and aggressivly wiped down the camera being careful not to let any water squeeze out of the sponge. The smell is 70% gone. Its is now only in the rubberized areas. I'll see if leica can replace them. DL4guy... I am serously considering your suggestion if it comes back smelly, although maybe just a little cologne on it instead : ) Thanks again for the replies. pop Posted July 25, 2009 Share #5 Posted July 25, 2009 Store it in a place where the air is constantly renewed, i.e. in a droughty place.
Guest flatfour Posted July 25, 2009 Share #6 Posted July 25, 2009 To remove smoke smells from anything - car interiors etc. etc. Get a bagful of grass cuttings, the quanitity depending on the volume to be cleared of the smoke odours. Put the camera in a plastic bag of dry, but not dried, grass cuttings. and leave overnight. To clear a room you will need a couple of large grass boxes full. rjsplace Posted July 31, 2009 Share #7 Posted July 31, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would place the camera near a high quality ion ozone air filter it will clear up most smells.
