Hello,

Im thinking about getting the leica brilliant view finder for the D-LUX 4 can anyone with one tell me if there is a center focus square that would line up with the central auto focus point? When using the lcd I usually use center AF and then recompose is this practical with the viewfinder.

From various posts it seems the view finder has 24mm bright lines and 35mm as well but not the 60mm? confirm.

I am sure some very thoughtful person worked out the conversion from the lcd screen of the 0 to 2.5X bar and how that related to the focal length over the 24-60mm range of the lens, can anyone recall this I cant find the post again.

I would be interested in thoughts if you have the Leica handgrip, I find the camera a little sllipy to hold" always use a wrist srap as worried about losing grip does the hand grip help with this?

thanks for any help all the best

Mark

Hello Mark,

Found this regarding focal lengths, maybe from a member on this site, can't remember:

I found the results of somebody's experiment, viz. using EXIF data and a series of pictures taken at different zoom extensions which compared the location of the white zoom indicator bar to the: "1.64ft - 00(inf)" shown in the LCD while zooming. I used "P" mode and the digital zoom was turned off.

Here are the results. If you set the white bar all the way to the left you (obviously) get 24mm. Under the "1" = 26mm. Under the "." = 28mm. Under the "6" = 32mm. Under the "4" = 37mm. Under the "f" = 41mm. Under the "t" 44mm. Under the "first empty space" = 48mm. Under the "hyphen" = 52mm. Under (actually a little to the left of) the "left infinity loop" = 57mm. And finally all the way to the right (again obviously) 60mm.

Hi Mark, I can't really help on one part of your query - I use an SBOOI viewfinder because I mostly operate at the 60mm end - but I have the Leica grip. It transforms the handling, and is easy to attach and remove for access to the battery and card compartment. Richard Franiec also does a grip - I have his for my G7. Very well made, but smaller. I have large hands, so the Leica one suits me better.

Regarding the Leica handgrip, I purchased a grip from Richard Franiec and have nothing but praise for the excellent design and workmanship, ease of application, and speedy delivery. The big advantage (in my opinion) is the fact that you can open the bottom flap of the camera without having to remove the grip, something that you must do with the Leica one. Also - it's a fraction of the price of the Leica grip! Here is the link:

I have nothing against Richard Franiec's grip --- by all reports, his creations are top notch. But I think the nuisance factor of the Leica grip is way overstated. I don't remove it for accessing the battery and memory card. I loosen the thumb screw just a bit and rotate it away from the body just enough so that the battery/card door is exposed and can be opened. Takes all of about five seconds.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice everyone, I got the viewfinder today and the Leica handgrip. Very pleased so far. The viewfinder is bright and the 24mm lines seem very accurate, I like getting back to raising the camera to my eye it feels much more natural and in bright light is great. I tried it out on a few "street" shots in Cambridge UK setting the camera to manual focus f8 and the focus scale at about 3ft to infinity. Still need to practise this style some of these shots are a little soft, but I could take fast shots and really wasn't being noticed.

Thanks for the tip, Jeff. One of those things that's so simple that I'm kicking myself for not having thought of it. Both my wife and I have tried it on our D-Lux 4s, and it simplifies things.

Lovely images, Mark.

My wife's cousin lives in Cambridge and we have visited a few times.

There is so many photo ops: colleges, gondola rides on the canals, historical scenes including Charles Darwin house, not to mention farmers market. And, yes, bicycles, literally tons of them. Venturing into countryside villages like Granchester (sorry if I spelled this wrong) are a pleasure to the eye (and lens) of photographer.

Looks like D-Lux4 works for you well no matter which grip is attached to it LOL.

Good luck

Richard

I like the LEICA grip, which works very well with the LENSMATE tube. 5 seconds to change card or battery, easy. Not the negative some would lead you to expect, but then it works very well for me but probably not for everyone.:D

I also have the viewfinder, which is spot on, just haven't used it much, yet.
