Advertisement Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Hi rick123, Take a look here How Well Does the Summilux-R 50mm f/1.4 Work with the Canon EOS 5D?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
robsteve Posted November 13, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 13, 2006 Perhaps you should ask this on a Canon forum? If it is the new Summilux, it will hit the mirror unless you remove the rear shroud on the lens. The 5D also has varying mirror clearances, so your results may vary. It fits fine on my DMR Alternative Digital Systems & Lenses - FM Forums
MarcD Posted November 13, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 13, 2006 the last version is not compatible with 5D, try the summicron. It's very contrasted, sometimes too much.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted November 13, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 13, 2006 It works with the 5D there is a rubber shroud on the rear that you need to remove sort of like a rubber band. Than it will clear the mirror but as Rob said the 5d tolerence for mirror clearance is all over the place. So some 5d it will work without removing the rbber and some you have to remove, how is that for manufacturing tolerences. It's a great lens also
billh Posted November 13, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 13, 2006 the last version is not compatible with 5D, try the summicron. . I've used the 50 f1.4 (latest version) on the 1Ds2 for some time now - are you sure it hits the mirror on the 5D?
Jamie Roberts Posted November 13, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 13, 2006 I didn't have a problem mounting a new Summilux--I guess it didn't have a shroud; couldn't get it to focus, though, so it might be adapter dependent. The old Canadian Summicron is excellent, and easily found on eBay.
wbesz Posted November 13, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 13, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I never really checked for clearances, ..just plugged it in with an adapter onto my 5D. The advantage for me is the excellent image from the current 50-R at max aperture (f1.4) which looks brilliant and detailed with large prints. The attached image was taken with the current Summilux-R 50 @ f1.4, but you really need to see images on print. _________________ Welcome, dear visitor! rick123 Posted November 13, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted November 13, 2006 Thank you all very much. And William - great image! Rick
Jamie Roberts Posted November 14, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 14, 2006 William--nice shot. I used my Summilux 1.4 all the time on my 1ds2, and it was spectacular. Like--it was shameful, really, how much better the 1ds2 was below 50mm with real glass Anyway--I could NOT get proper close focus with the newest version 'lux on the 5D. As I said, it just clicked on--no problems with mounting it (yeah--the 35 1.4 smacks right against the mirror. I tried it ) So--what adaptor are you using? I was using the Cameraquest, but have now ordered a couple from somewhere in the far east that actually offer focus confirmation on the EOS bodies. I'll let people know how that works! wbesz Posted November 14, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 14, 2006 You're welcome Rick, and thanks. Jamie, yes, ..Cameraquest is the one attached to the Summilux-50. I need another adapter to attach to another Leica-R lens. I thought I might try the Novoflex this time just to see how they compare. Good to know I can't use the 35/1.4, saves buying one if I came across it somewhere used.
