likealeica Posted July 21, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 21, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello. I recently bought the lensmate adapter tube and 46mm uv filter for my Dlux4. I was wondering whether folks who have the adapter tend to leave it on the camera permanently. I have found that leaving it on makes the camera awfully difficult to carry around unless I use the neckstrap, which I do not think works as well as a wrist starp. In fact, I am beginning to wonder why use the adapter at all? Just to support a uv filter? Just to protect the zooming mechanism as Lensmate says? I would appreciate any comments. Gerard Posted July 21, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 21, 2009 I leave my Pandabase 52mm tube on all the time, with Hoya HD filters/protectors. I find it makes handling a little easier; but it sure doesn't fit in a shirt pocket any more. Do what works best for you - but don't do anything that, in your eyes, limits the camera's useability. Edit: I love using the Hoya HD PL filter outdoors, and was the reason for purchasing the tube but, if I'm honest, I hanker for a used M8 one day with a 24mm Elmar or Elmarit ASPH; so leave the tube on all the time, and use a viewfinder as much as possible, so as not to find the M8 'cumbersome' if I ever get the chance to upgrade. As for the viewfinder, I tried some old Leica finders from my collection, 28mm and 50mm, but finally bought the new DLux 4 finder and just leave it on the camera full-time. I appreciate the protection the Lensmate and a filter provide for the lens and zooming mechanism. I have used the neck strap from the beginning and don't find it cumbersome at all. After a while it becomes quite natural ... but, I never really thought of the D-Lux 4 as just a 'point and shoot' camera that I'd carry around in my pocket, so I never really tried a wrist strap. You probably know this already, but just in case: the tube must be removed prior to flash photography due to a shadow cast when left in place. On one of the other posts, I said I was using happily a 40+ year-old 28mm Leica metal viewfinder (SLOOZ) and it worked just great. Until... I was in Martha's Vineyard 2 weeks ago, taking a picture of a fishing shack, using the SLOOZ 28mm finder. When I looked at the picture on the screen, I noticed that the shack was tilted about 10 or 15 degrees. Curious, until I happened to look at the finder. In the finder, which is the old metal type, very much in demand, and not a scratch or even a blemish on this one, original case, etc. - the lens which bears the 28mm frame engraving had suddenly de-cemented and shifted. No parts available at Leica. Apparently the old balsam cement ages, gets brittle, etc. So, I just bought the new 24/35mm Dlux4 finder - 2 year warranty in the U.S. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Yeah, it's no longer a pocket camera, but with the handgrip and the viewfinder I'm very happy with what I've put together. Everything fits very well into a LOWEPRO Apex 110 AW. likealeica Posted July 30, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted July 30, 2009 Good idea, and maybe here is another one since I started this post in the first place. I revived an old Leica M3 hard case. The DLux4, with lensmate adapter and Leica viewfinder attached fits perfectly in the M3 case. The camera doesn't fasten to the case, it just sits there snugly but not forced. So it isn't best for walking around, but with the case snapped closed, it makes a dandy protector for carrying the DLux in the car, in a backpack, etc. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I am still wondering what the best solution is for a case, I want something as small as possible to fit the DL4, Leica Grip and lensadapter. I am thinking along the lines of Tifoso though, and have been looking at the half case from Popflash as a main protector, but no-one seems to have any thoughts on these. ayres Posted August 27, 2009 Share #13 Posted August 27, 2009 like others have mentioned, i find it much easier to handle the camera with the lensmate on (or whatever other brand you have). obviously, it is really nice to have filter capabilities, but there is a more important reason for me... i do lots of field work in dry, dusty places (sub-alpine and alpine environments in hawaii). so the extension provides additional protection against dust, dirt and moisture. i guess so far, i've been lazy and left it on. but on occasion, i remove the filter only for a shot. Speaking of, for the money you'd spend on A&A, you may want to consider Luigi, if you haven't already. Don't be turned off by the amateurish and muddled website --- his cases and straps are absolute works of art.
