tjv Posted July 18, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, it's been a long time since I've posted over here. For my type of work the new S2 seems like it would be the ideal camera (price, reliability and service not part of the equation yet,) and I hope to buy one, finances permitting, in the future. Obviously Hasselblad and Phase are two other options but I'd prefer a more compact system. The one thing I don't like about the S2, but which is also to its advantage, is its 3x2 ratio sensor. I use 35mm quite a bit for reportage and documentary work, but for personal work I much prefer the standard MF 4x3 ratio. I wonder if Leica could introduce a replacement mirror with markings for 4x3 ratio and maybe another for square to aid in composition for people like me. Just a thought. berndr Posted July 18, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 18, 2009 Yes, and one shorter mirror for the use of 35mm R lenses via adapter. But I am sure this is not possible because it isn't taken into account when the concept of the S2 was made. Regards, Bernd.
tjv Posted July 18, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted July 18, 2009 Does anyone know if the mirror is replaceable or permanent? I've sent Leica a request in the hope they will listen. EDIT: I meant to write I'd like a replacement focusing screen with markings. As such I've miss titled the thread AND suggested the wrong thing to Leica. Oops! And I keep writing mirror out of habit in the following few posts.
mjh Posted July 18, 2009 Share #4 Posted July 18, 2009 I wonder if Leica could introduce a replacement mirror with markings for 4x3 ratio and maybe another for square to aid in composition for people like me. It is generally true for any SLR that the mirror is only replaced when it is broken. And there is no way you could build a mirror that would create any kind of markings in the viewfinder image. That’s what interchangeable focusing screens are for.

I think I mixed my terminology up by mistake. I mean focusing screen! Would it be possible to put the crop markings on the mirror and for them to be accurate? jaapv Posted July 18, 2009 Share #6 Posted July 18, 2009 I'm sure Brightscreen will be able to produce all kinds of replacement matte screens with suitable engravings for the S2.

I mean focusing screen!Would it be possible to put the crop markings on the mirror and for them to be accurate? Surely any marks on the mirror would be way out of focus, and quite possibly invisible. Just think of an ordinary domestic mirror - the "image" is behind the mirror, not on it. Specifically, the lens focusses the image on the sensor, so if the mirror is at 45 degrees, I suppose you'd have to imagine a virtual sensor plane, but below the mirror, the same distance away as the actual sensor. tjv Posted July 18, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted July 18, 2009 Great, I wasn't sure if the focusing screens were interchangeable or not. If they are then that is great news.
tjv Posted July 18, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted July 18, 2009 Ah, yes. Sorry again. I'm in bed with the Swine Flu and my head really isn't working properly. I meant to say focusing screen again... Must be time to take a few more cold and flu tablets. Surely any marks on the mirror would be way out of focus, and quite possibly invisible.
