Love my M4-2 but ...

Got my M4-2 quite some time ago but it seems to have some sort of problem.

Very irregular spot on about 50% of the images. Sometimes it happens 5 times in a row, sometimes it appears once and goes clear for 4-5 frames.

It APPEARS to occur at the same spot, but only recently I found a spot that was IN-BETWEEN the frames!

The spot always looked the same, and it looked odd.

Here are some samples.

Have you held your shutter curtain up to a bright light to inspect integrity of same? Take lens off and open back. Shine a birght light at the front of the camera. A pinhole in the curtain could produce "spots."

Checked in a dark room at night with a strong torch. Both sides, shutter advanced half-way, and all the way. No pinholes. :(

In between the frames ? My guess is that this is a light-leak and not the shutter. A shutter-problem should be visible in every frame and since it occurred with different lenses it can't be internal reflections, either. Are the strap-lugs still fixed and can't be rotated at all ? Otherwise, an internal light-leak. near the take-up spool.

  • 1 month later...

Brought to a Serviceman (he knows how to service Leicas but he isn't a Leica almighty all-knowing expert). Tried to patch up but not sure where is the leak.

Scanned a "contact print".

The leaks are marked red. there are more but they aren't quite visible on the "contact print".

They occur randomly, they don't normally occur indoors but sometimes they do.

Sometimes they occur in rapid succession and sometimes it just disappears for 10 frames or so.

So, any ideas of the source of the leak?

Do take note of the last leak after the last frame.

Have a look at the upper back door!

Maybe it is loose and moves more or less, dependent on Your individual camera movement.

Inspect the door in a dark room using a strong light, remove the lens, stick the light in, turn on "B" and expose, if You try to move the back door, You should be able to see a leak, if it is in that position.

Or take a spotted film strip, place it in the camera, so that the frame and the shutter window match, and figure out were the leak must be. Remember, the developed filmstrip must be put upside down in the camera!

"Kodak 400tx" points to the the bottom side of the camera and the matt surface of the film is directed to the shutter frame window!

It cannot be a loose lug, as the position of the spot stays in the same place, so it must be in an area where the film is flat in one layer, and not wound in an increasing number of layers.

It could be a gap in the back door - you could check by shining a bright light at the back of the camera, with the lens removed and peering inside.

However, I think it is more likely to be a leak coming in from the viewfinder/rangefinder area - there are some internal seals apparently which can fail.

Another idea - put a new film in, use light proof tape and tape up the rear door then use a bright light and shine it into the viewfinder/rangefinder windows at different angles. Take a few frames like this, then tape up the viewfinder/rangefinder windows, remove the tape around the rear door and do the same with the rear door - process of elimination!

I seem to remember a previous thread with a similar problem that turned out to be an internal light leak from the view/rangefinder assembly. Try searching for it. (Sorry, I don't have the time to do it now)

I second Guy's opinion. My M3 had the same problem, at almost the exact same location.

Thanks for the replies folks.

In my 2nd attempt to shine light in a "dark" room, I "think" I found the leak.

Is the leak around here normal?

You can only view it at an extremely narrow angle, and it is very faint, even in a dark room with bright torches.

When I advance the shutter, the leak kinds "moves" along with it.
