lars_bergquist Posted July 17, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 17, 2009 Again one of those threads that are essentially "Which is best, chocolate or strawberry ice cream?" Which lens you should buy depends first on what kinds of pictures you want to make, and second on what lens or lenses you already have. No intelligent answer can be given without answers to these two, and the first one is simply impossible for anyone else to give a sensible answer to. (Not that this means that the photographer himself can always answer it, or even often ...) As for a decision between the two actual specimens, that depends on the relationship of price to state. Both should be more or less the same age. The existence of some kind of guaranty from one or both sellers could decide the matter between two identical lenses, but they are not identical of course -- there are always the matters touched on in the first paragraph. Both optics are first class by design and manufacture -- Leica, quite simply. Try to give some more info, please. luigi bertolotti Posted July 19, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 19, 2009 I have both, and both, as expected, are top quality lenses, 24 a little sharper imho (look is almost identical, but the 2 designs are at all different) : given that you have M8, the answer is depending on a pair of questions to you : 1) Which are your other lenses ? 28 and 24 are definitely too close ... I abandoned the idea of a new 28 after buying the 24. 2) Almost more important : are you accustomed to mount and use external viewfinders ? With M8 this is a BIG difference between 21 and 24 usage... imho, more important than the small diference in focal /FOV.
Philippe D. Posted July 19, 2009 Share #4 Posted July 19, 2009 Hi, I have both (...) 28 and 24 are definitely too close ... I abandoned the idea of a new 28 after buying the 24. and you have 21-24 ! The Summicron 28A is a marvel, Luigi. Don't let you punish that way in not having it. For our friend Jack, i do go for the 24A also. It's a diamond. 911turbojk Posted July 21, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted July 21, 2009 Guys thanx for the great advice, well currently I have a 50mm lux, 35mm cron, so I am thinking getting a wider angle lens for m8,,, I prefer a lens that is sharp and have the best possible image in that price range,,, so is 24mm 2.8 sharper than the 21mm 2.8? I have this impression, indeed ... if you can wait a little , I can find the way to post a pair of identical pictures taken with both lenses, with some crop/enlargement... of course there are the limits of jpeg compression for attaching pics, but can be revealing. If everything ok at home, can be I can shot & post tonight...
noah_addis Posted July 21, 2009 Share #8 Posted July 21, 2009 Any small difference in sharpness shouldn't be enough to make your decision on. I'd choose based on your preference for focal length and if you want to use an external finder which you'd need with the 21mm. I had both, though I just traded my 24 Elmarit for a 24 'Lux. But they were both great lenses. I used the 24 much more often though, since I don't like external finders much. The 21 is fairly close to the 24, but it does feel more like a wide lens. I kept my 21 ASPH for times when I need something wider (and as backup) but I don't use it much.
