Skyerider Posted July 14, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) New to Aperture 2 and using the trial for two days. Importing photos from disk works OK. When I plug in my Leica M8.2 (supported by Aperture 2) the camera shows up in the top left corner but the main area in the Aperture 2 display is blank - no photos are shown - so I am unable to import. The pictures are on the card and are in DNG format. Am I doing something really stupid? David. (question also posed on Apple Aperture forum)
Advertisement Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Hi Skyerider, Take a look here M8.2 and Aperture 2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted July 14, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 14, 2009 Well, not exactly stupid, but inadvisable. The best way to import images is to use a card reader.

Fokalfissur Posted July 14, 2009 Share #4 Posted July 14, 2009 Well, there might always be some problems with some sd card. But as long as the finder shows the content aperture will do it, too. If you plug in the camera you should first specifie which program to use (image capture, aperture, finder…). And yes, you should get a card reader whichever program you use…

Julian Thompson Posted July 14, 2009 Share #6 Posted July 14, 2009 Hi David All the advice will tell you to remove the SD card each time but I'm not so sure I personally agree - I use the USB probably 50% of the time depending on if I have only a few shots (say 30 or 40) to transfer. If I have hundreds then yes, it's SD card reader. Anyway - all that's another matter. I can give you a workflow for what you are trying to do which works faultlessly for me and I did experience what you are experiencing before so hopefully this will fix it for you. Firstly, in Aperture, select 'Preferences' from the 'Aperture' menu and make sure that you have 'Open Aperture' selected from the dropdown that determines what to do when a camera is connected. Now you can close Aperture. When you want to transfer your photo's - from a blank but booted desktop follow this: 1) Plug the mini USB wire into the camera. 2) Turn the camera on and make sure you wait 5 seconds. 3) Plug the USB wire into the computer. That should work perfectly every time. The only thing to note is that when you have transferred the shots you will not get the 'shots transferred do you want to erase them from the card' message - or if you do it won't function nicely. Just say no thanks and then, when you turn on the camera next time just format the card in-camera - 2 seconds work. Best of luck. :-)

ianman Posted July 15, 2009 Share #9 Posted July 15, 2009 So why is everyone advising against pluging the camera ?? I've been using various digital cameras for years and never had any sort of issue. But I'm new here so what have I missed ? Seems important ! Thanks
Julian Thompson Posted July 15, 2009 Share #10 Posted July 15, 2009 Well, it a lot slower, so it is better to use an SD reader if you have hundreds of shots to get off. Secondly, I have heard people comment on the 'fragile' usb connector in the camera. I personally have had no problems but I have only been using M8's for a few months so maybe I will be proved wrong but to me the usb connector looks just like any other mini usb - ie fragile if treated badly but acceptably robust if used with care. It works fine, though, should you want or need to use it. (I recently forgot my sd card reader on a trip and was happy it was there!)
jaapv Posted July 15, 2009 Share #11 Posted July 15, 2009 It works better and is just a precaution against coupling an expensive machine electrically to a computer, which may transmit power surges - rare, but not unknown, My practice is next to the main Shell refinery - those surges are quite common here and have cost me a number of electronic apparatus. That is really good advice but at times when there is no reader around and a direct connection is required, can anyone advise me on how to enable this with Capture One? It works for Aperture but on my MBP and C1 (4.8.1), the M8 is not accessible when connected directly.
