Dead M8.2 Battery Charger in Shanghai

HELP - My battery charger shows no signs of life. NO lights coming on - but the power sockets in the hotel are fine and another appliance works OK using the same figure 8 cable.

A. does anyone know of an M8 dealer in Shanghai or Guangzhou? I'm in China for the next 12 days with trekking in the Huang Shan area and then visiting old friends in Guangzhou before going back to Shanghai via Su Zhou. I could really do without this!

I have three other charged batteries with me - but I doubt if they'll see me through.

B. does anyone know of a way of checking if the charger's working even if there are no lights on? I'll leave the present depleted battery in overnight just to see.

It's midnight in Shanghai, so I'll not be checking for the list for another 8 hours but I'd be really grateful for any advice - I'm going to email Solms too.

Thanks

My first suspect would be the dodgy voltage regulation... I bet it blew out the internal fuse or burned out something in the charger... I had similar experience with my IPhone charger while in the South last year...

If it is the old charger I think you may still be able to use it on the 12 V (car adapter) power. I seem to recall people using a standard 12V DC off the shelf generic power supply to feed the Leica charger if the 230Vac side of things got fried.

Sorry to hear that.

May have been fried by a power surge - not unusal.

There must be some form of protection (fuse or other micro-switch) inside the charger, which may only need to be replaced.

Alternatively, perhaps one of the ebay Chinese no-name battery manufacturers is based in the areas you are visiting? Not ideal, but worth checking...

There's no need to panic; I'm sure there are many places in Shanghai or Guangzhou selling Leica accessories. Try calling (86) 400-888-3600, it's the main number for Leica in China. Someone there should be able to help you with all your needs. :)

Hi Chris,

There are a few shops that only sell Leica cameras and lenses at an established camera mall in Shanghai. I do not know if they are authorized dealers. They might have stock for the charger. Litreral translation of the mall's name is Star Light, located right at the junction of Xie Tu Road and Lu Ban Road. It's within town area, convenient from any hotel. These Leica shops are on higher floors. Shops at the mall may open at 10am and close at around 5pm, 7 days a week. Good luck and enjoy spending one or two hours there.

SJP is correct; assuming you are using the old charger, you can still feed it 12v (actually anything up to 19v or more) and run the charger section. You could therefore use a laptop brick, though be aware if you use Apple ones, the chargers appear to only switch on when they detect they are connected to an Apple PC. I expect a generic "brick" will be much easier to source than a replacement charger.

The brick needs to be able to supply a current of at least 1 amp.

That said, I see you said M8.2 charger in which case you are probably using the newer compact charger and I have no experience of it. However, it's likely to be the same situation and I expect the charger has failed because the internal fuse has blown, unfortunately probably soldered in place.

I think using the 12v connection is probably your best bet.

Yes Mark his mention of the S cord leads me to beleave he is using the newer smaller charger. But that one also has a 12V input on it.

Many thanks to everyone - some people knock the forum - but it's a real life saver when your back's against the wall!

I've emailed Andrea at Leica Professional and am hoping they can courier a charger to me at either Huang Shan or in Guangzhou - if this isn't going to be feasible I'll see if I can get one from the Leica agent / shops mentioned here.

REALLY grateful to all who have replied.

QUESTION - this is the M8.2 charger - and it does have the 12 volt adapter. Is it worth trying to get something locally to convert from mains and connect to this?

Many thanks again.

Yes it is. I have taken one of my M8, big brick charger, 12V car charger cords and converted it to run on one of my Dell notebook power supplies. That way if the 120V part of it ever dies I can just use the notebook power suppy.

Thanks for this - am I correct in thinking that if I can get a "multi" power connector I might be able to get somewhere? My Toshiba laptop connector's the wrong size - does anyone know what the diameter of the 12v connector on the Leica should be + is polarity an issue?

Great Service from Leica's main agent in Guangzhou and they're going to sort out a charger for me which I can pick up in 3 days when I get down there. A very kind lady called Susie Ma at SchmidtTrading is sorting things out.

THANKS to you all for your help.

I'll update at the end of the saga.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to finish the story. Leica were able to bring a replacement charger up to Guangzhou for me and I swapped the dead one on Monday. Since then I've been finishing a documentary job for a client and have done a bit of travelling. Images below are from a set done in Suhzou (a historic city a couple of of hours from Shanghai). On my way back soon and in UK Friday.

MANY thanks to those who helped me get this sorted out. A few images from the last leg of the trip (a dramatic total eclipse in the morning - but no sun shots as it poured down all day). I'll post a link to a major set once I've got things sorted out.

Best ... :)

I was in London and my M8, blackberry and shaver chargers were not working. they sent a techician up and after he tried a few adapters that they had, my chargers were functioning again. may be you should talked to house keeping and see what they can do

good luck

Glad you got things sorted out. I bet next time you'll take a second charger!

I'm thinking of buying a few of the smaller chargers. Taking several of the old brick chargers takes up a lot of space.

Setting up a 12v option is a great idea that I hadn't thought of.
