Very impressed with your pictures, Ned.

I was wondering how the lens feels on the camera. Especially since you do street photography and don't want your equipment too heavy and large I imagine.

I had ordered this lens and then cancelled the order because of price and weight, but your pictures make me have second thoughts.

The lens feels very well balanced on my M4P or M7. The shooting is seamless. Many 21mm f2.8 lenses are quite chunky, therefore the 21 lux is not very different. As a matter of fact, I was expecting a much bigger piece of glass then what it really is. Think of it: It's a 21mm f1.4!!!

I love the feel and the touch and the lens isn't big.

I don't feel I overpaid for it. I think it's worth every penny.

Ned,

that shot of the car crash is incredible..makes me feel uncomfortable, like I want to raise a camera and keep shooting but can't because of the woman shouting...

Ned, are you using the new 21mm finder for the lens? I just picked one up and it is top drawer in every respect. I'm using it on my M7 and M8's. Makes the 28/2 Cron a bit easier to use on the M7 with 0.72 frame lines.

Congratulations on the lens.

I use the Leica finder which is very nice. Tried the CV and totally hated it.

With a wide angle it's easier, IMO. You can fake to shoot something on the floor while they have no clue they're included in the shot. In this case I was rather very present but being subtle with a wide angle is quite easy. At least I think.

now you posted more pics.. I really enjoyed of those.. I think your words "Altough the lens gives a pre-asph rendition, the sharpness wide open is definitely ASPH caliber." tell that it combines the best of both "worlds".

If i have to be honest..and look at pics without knowing what lens was used. I would say "an old lens" because it has so rich tones (or what it appears to be, otherwise I also judge wet prints). It reminds me somewhat of Summarit, Summicron 28mm when it regards only contrast. It appears be a bit lower than the "best ones". Am I wrong?

you use the new leica vf huh? I feel the same way as you do for CV vf which I have too. I have thought buying Zeiss but the high price of Leica vf is not so bad because I like 21 and 28mm and could use the same vf while changing lenses. so I'm only wondering which one to choose. How is the new leica vf compared to old one metalic if you have tried the old one too?

Ho Tomasis,

I can't tell about the contrast in comparison with the other lenses. It's extremly hard to tell. I know it has excellent contrast and there is no difference in my negatives between images taken with this lens or the 35 summilux asph. They're so close that I often mistake them apart. I can differentiate, however, all the shots I took with the summilux 50mm pre-asph by looking at the negatives.

The finder I use is the old one made of plastic. I feel it's just right with a good magnification ratio. I also use the zeiss 18mm finder for my Distagon but the ratio is too high, my eyes wander too much throughout the whole frame.

good info. thanks...as you say, it is hard to tell unless one has tried all lenses..

well I dont think about contrast too much because im shooting films too... but it is interesting to hear that 21 lux manages have same contrast as 35 lux asph. it sounds quite good for wide angle as 21mm.

i just forgot how good films are ;) plenty of tones even contrast is not that low. What scanner are you using? V700?

Thanks! Just have the 21 now but I may buy the 24 again as I feel at times the 21 is too wide and the 24 may be just right.

Cheers,

When I used the M6's I found the 21mm slightly too wide and sold it in favour of the 24mm. With the M8's I'm still happy with the 24mm but keep wondering what a 21 would be like.

ah two last images show more of character of the new lens.. like them!

yeah it looks like new lens (35lux asph as you say)..

nice to see also that the lens can give different character with grainy bw films.. two different worlds?:p

thats something..

Just a little bump and a request. I've really enjoyed this thread. I look forward to seeing more stuff from this very unique lens.

It's just that this thread is buried in the far corner of the photos section when the thread is clearly about the attributes and view of a particular Leica lens, in this case the 21 'lux. I happened upon this thread quite by chance. Should it be in the Customer Forum alongside other lens threads?

Just an idea.

The 21 lux definitely has its own character. I don't think the ASPH name should right away mean "clinical whatever". It's extremely sharo wide open (for a 21mm lens) while keeping great contrast throughout. The character is definitely there.

I posted in the Customer Forum but the moderators thought it would be better burried in the VERY Last Forum of the LAST Subforum. Quite annoying and counter defeating the purpose of a "Customer Forum". After all, it's the Fantastic 21 summilux wonder we're praising here.

Too bad for the forum in general, IMO. I know I was searching for samples from this lens and couldn't find any. Probably because the samples we're burried into sub-subforums.

What a delight to browse this thread !

Nenad, thanks for sharing this generous lot !

Just have to say that I think you have a fabulous eye....(despite all the lens talk ;))

Thanks!

I am aware that someone looking for samples from this lens will be happy to see the photos...
