I just ordered and recieved within a week a new Nikon Super CoolScan ED5000 from my local Nikon Dealer at less than the big camera stores and for not much more than they are selling for on eBay used. since it has a new waurantee, Ebay was not a consideration.

Works great and the slide auto feeder is not a requirement for me as of now. The 5000's are still in the pipeline, you just have to look.-Dick

The "problem" with the 5000ED is that by the time you add both the slide feeder and the roll film reader you're looking at a >US$2K scanner.

That's why I recommend the Coolscan V with the loader well under $1K and the best scanner bang for the buck.

Just to throw my two (Aussie) cents into the mix- I have recently (in the last 2 weeks) shelled out for a copy of Vuescan (pro edition). I don't think I have ever made a better investment! It blows Nikon Scan 4 (which I was using prior) out of the water, almost to the point where I want to go back and re-scan all the ancient Kodachromes of my father's again!

I'm using this with a Coolscan IV which, while more than acceptable for my needs and budget, isn't really suited to bulk scanning. If you have more than a couple of hundred slides to scan, the investment in a model with bulk scanning support would be worthwhile.

Hi John,

I found this review of the Microtek Artiscan which replaces the i900:

Test Report Microtek ArtixScan F1 Flat Bed Scanner, Filmscanner for glassless Scanning, Experience Report, Image Quality, SilverFast

It still looks like an interesting tool and barring any changes, will probably be the one I get.

as well as this one for the Epson 700 (the 750 gave the same results)

Test report flatbed-film-scanner Epson Perfection V700 Photo with transparency unit: experiences, image quality, scanning

EPSON V700 review

They both look interesting - does anyone have a side-by-side comparison (preferably using the same software as it would seem from what I read that this also can make a huge difference to the image quality)?.

thanks

Ravi

I agree with much of what has been posted in response to this question, it's a wonderful thing being able to access so much knowledge on this Forum, however something did catch my eye:

Forgive me for dragging up a thread which appears to have been resolved, but, out of curiosity I visited the Scan Cafe website and though I appreciate the pictures shown on the home page are from old emulsions, some of them just didn't look right to me.

Perhaps it's the laptop I'm currently on (which hasn't been calibrated for two months) but some of those colour casts are intense! I would expect that sort of thing to be dealt with unless I specifically asked for the originals to be scanned with all colour correction etc. left to me.

Most decent scanners come with profiles for each film which should eliminate these casts, even with neg and if not a little Potatoshop should do the trick.

Other than that they have a very nice website.
