sfokevin Posted July 9, 2009 Share #22 Posted July 9, 2009 We don't know anything yet, but my guess is that the M9 will have the 4000 shutter. You need to follow the forum closer!... The M9 committee has finalized all M9 specs and it is listed for preorder at Dale's camera!... I would link the thread where all the committees choices were decided... but for some reason the thread has been moved?... Back on Thread... I had the full upgrade and it is like a new camera!... Don't regret it at all!...
Jeff S Posted July 9, 2009 Share #23 Posted July 9, 2009 Shutter issues!!!! I have! Yikes...seems like a repair issue, not an upgrade issue! I'm serious about the allocation of your dollars...get the shutter fixed, but beyond that, buy a lens instead. We don't know about the M9 features, or when it will come, but you'll use the lens now. And, I fear the M9 cost will be equivalent to several lenses. Jeff

Yes, and now we also now know what the USB port on the M8 casing is really for. It's for the connection to the belt-pack CPU and power supply required to handle all of the extra goodies the committee has determined are required in the M9. hoppyman Posted July 10, 2009 Share #25 Posted July 10, 2009 I was at the Forum meetings and visited Leica. They upgraded my M8 for me for collection the next business day (and waived the express fees since I was there visiting from overseas for only a couple more days at that time). They even loaned me an M8.2 to use while my camera was with them over the weekend. I got the shutter and frame lines upgrade. In my opinion they are well worth having. Once I first tried the M8.2 shutter and viewfinder, I was conscious of the difference with my M8 every single time. The price difference between upgrading your M8 and selling it to buy the M8.2 will depend on where you are. Here in Australia the M8.2 costs double the (discounted) M8. So I saved quite a lot by getting the upgrades instead. The upgrades are cheaper if you get more than one at the same time, of course. Plus Leica checks and adjusts all functions of your camera to new specifications and you get an extra year's warranty on the whole camera, not just the upgraded parts. mhoersch Posted July 10, 2009 Share #26 Posted July 10, 2009 Miguelito, Yo hice el upgrade de los cuadros del visor y del zafiro de la pantalla en mis dos cámaras. Really?
woodyspedden Posted July 11, 2009 Share #27 Posted July 11, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) We don't know anything yet, but my guess is that the M9 will have the 4000 shutter. Quite a few posts have described the complete shutter failure in the original M8.s Mine was amongst them. The shutter looked like it had "flown apart" and was a complete mess. The camera was out of warranty so I had the full monty upgrades done including sapphire and vulcanite. The camera now looks beautiful, has the really quiet shutter and is a joy to look at. Files are no different of course so you may want to wait for the shutter to fail and then have the upgrade done. Woody
marknorton Posted July 11, 2009 Share #28 Posted July 11, 2009 One of the reasons why Leica may have reduced the top shutter speed is to increase the durability of the shutter. Hold the original shutter in your hand, feel how thin and light the shutter blades are and how strong the spring resistance to the cocking lever action is and you can understand how the shutter can get mashed if things go wrong. As for the upgrade program, we do not know how long Leica will keep it going, though the cost justification is weaker after the price rise. A viable alternative is just to trade in the M8 and buy an 8.2. It's in Leica's interest to have a strong market of secondhand M8s to provide the entry level to M digital photography. So, my recommendation is that if you are minded to have the upgrade, get it done sooner rather than later; don't forget too that Leica has an insatiable appetite for raising prices. Very interesting indeed! If I want to keep my m8 for many years, would be very important to do at least the shutter upgrade. Thank for the information. That changes a bit my plans and start to think about again. Thank you very much! Miguel
