Guest Posted July 18, 2009 Share #42 Posted July 18, 2009 Quote: People can be strange. Once in a restaurant in Paris an American family sat at the next table and the husband had what looked like a mint Nikon F2. I mentioned that it looked superb and I got a look back that could have curdled milk at 20 paces. Well, Steve, he had perhaps told his wife about 'this cheap old camera' he recently acquired ... . Andy Suggest a post of the month / of the quarter contest here. Andy's post is hard to top not only in July. :)
offshore Posted July 18, 2009 Share #43 Posted July 18, 2009 Saw a guy on a movie set today, who had what seemed to be a "brand spankin' new" black m8.2 with a 35 'lux, whipped over his shoulder. I said to him "nice camera" and he didn't return a comment. Then I asked him "is that a Summilux?" and he said in a defensive voice, "NO IT'S A LEICA." Don't mention "spankin" on this forum the Brits will get all hot inside.
tgray Posted July 20, 2009 Share #44 Posted July 20, 2009 That's funny, because I live in New York and if I'm out shooting for more than an hour or so I generally have at least one person come up to me and ask me my opinion of the M8, what lens is that, etc. That's funny. In the 3 or 4 years I've shot with an M I've had exactly one stranger approach me and ask me about the camera. That was in Paris. I've never had anyone say anything in NYC, where I sometimes go and shoot for an afternoon. Maybe it's because I shoot with a film M. Maybe it's just me. haha. Dan States Posted July 20, 2009 Share #45 Posted July 20, 2009 Saw a guy on a movie set today, who had what seemed to be a "brand spankin' new" black m8.2 with a 35 'lux, whipped over his shoulder. I said to him "nice camera" and he didn't return a comment. Then I asked him "is that a Summilux?" and he said in a defensive voice, "NO IT'S A LEICA." Could be he bought all the nonsense about a Leica making you 'invisible'! He was really thinking "Piss off man, I'm trying to be Henri Cartier Bresson!" The vast majority of the worlds population could care less about your camera. If they are like me they are too busy thinking about themselves! Steve Pope Posted July 21, 2009 Share #46 Posted July 21, 2009 Don't mention "spankin" on this forum or the Brits will get all hot inside. And so would YOU if you'd been breast-fed by a succession of dominatrix nannies before your cold and remote parents packed you off to a top public school while still in nappies. The upside, of course, is that we have the stiffest upper lips in the business, plus we all get to live in castles!

The upside, of course, is that we have the stiffest upper lips in the business, plus we all get to live in castles! The downside these days is the heating costs for the boiling oil. However, I've solved that recently by putting Crocodiles into the moat. Much less costly to run.
jaapv Posted July 21, 2009 Share #48 Posted July 21, 2009 My silver M8 in it's Luigi tan case & strap with silver 35 'cron has often attracted the same 'old film camera' conversation and the surprise when people realize that it's a) digital, german and c) built like a brick. Category "c" are usually would-be muggers....
