Missing photographs from SD card

There was some thread on this, but my case might be stranger. I just thought I would put out the incident. I don't think there is anyway to get the data. But, pictures were certanly not once a lifetime thing either except one where cattles on road as we were driving.

Here is what happened. During the trip, out of all SD cards, 4 (one 4GB, rest 2GB Sandisk from Costco), one of the SD card is totally blank. I know I took handful of pictures with the card. I remember the shots. But, card is totally empty. I can't see from neither computer nor from camera. This was second to last card used during the trip.

Wondered if same case happened to others as well.

Could you have unknowingly formatted your card by mistake? I know I have pushed the 'Set' button while in the 'Delete' mode faster than I should and have inadvertently deleted images. If you don't think you have, and have not used the same card since, you could try to find them using a restore software like Rescue. :)

If the card was not properly formatted or otherwise not usable by the camera, the pics might be stored in the internal storage of the camera (depending on make and model, of course).

Even if the card was formatted any shots would still be there if the card hasn't been used since. As far as I know formatting doesn't erase the card, it just tells it that it is all available for data to be written.

A quick question?

Does the card in question appear 'normal otherwise on the computer or in the camera? i.e. is the directory structure intact or is totally blank?

If it looks OK, apart from having no files, then an inadvertent format is more likely. If it is completely blank, with no directory structure, then some form of corruption is possible. (Airport metal detector or some other electrical/magnetic influence.) :(

Thank youa for jumping in with ideas.

1) Card is normal card I have been using with M8, they've been functioning fine.

2) No did not format as far as I know either on computer or on camera after the shots were taken (but accident could happen I guess).

3) Card looks normal and functional. I can browse the folders that existed there.

4) Have not yet tried any recovery tools yet, but it is not too late since I have not used the card since then. Will give a try. But, as I said there were not important shots. B

5) Battery was fine as well.

It is really strange.

Thank you again for the all the idea.
