D2 or LC1 owners?

I planned to purchase Vlux 1 earlier, however, for my street photography, I would rather feel more comfortable with D2/LC1, and was wondering if I should ~~~

1) Wait till Vlux 1 gets fixed on hardware problems or firmware

2) Wait till Leica comes with bigger sensor/small camera like D2

3) Go ahead and get a second hand D2 or LC1

4) Get Vlux 1 and be happy with it

Hmmmm. any opinion?

I know the IQ of D2/LC1 but, would I be able to keep it for awhile?

Thanks in advance!

Tommy

The D2 is a fantastic camera if you do not need a big buffer and can live with the EVF. Although a relatively small sensor the images at low ei are fantastic and the lens is true Leica quality. Try one and see if it fits your style. The LC1 will give you a black body which the D2 will not. Used it does not matter which too much.

While the D2's sensor is small, it's 2/3"--significantly bigger than the V-LUX's 1/1.8", and with half as many pixels. The lens is better, too, unless you need a superzoom's range.

There's a reason that second hand D2/LC1 prices are so high.

... lets get this into perspective, if you are into street photography whether it be bitumen, concrete, dirt clay etc the textures of streets, avenues or roads are boring any camera will do..

Choice between the cameras, much the same the D2 is not a quick action performer, in crowds it is adequent when compared to film, remember it is not smaller than a DSLR . Try a Pentax K1000 with a small pancake lens a much better package with the extra flexability in DOF

Imants,

I think Tommy was referring to 'people photography' , not 'pavement photography'......

Agreed wholehartedly, assuming that the K1000 being recommended is the old 35mm SLR - those can be had on eBay for less than US$100.00 nowadays. However, Tommy's question is on the digital forum and he was asking specifically about differences between various digital cameras.

Get a D2! I am consistently amazed at the image quality. The firmware is improved over the LC-1.

The only reason IMO to get the V-lux is if you really really need a very long lens a lot of the time.

There are a number on that auction site at the moment - but it is interesting to note that the ones with a high starting price do not seem to be selling. Are people off-loading in preparation for D3 or what?

Tommy,

D2 is a very high quality camera. Also, the in-camera black and white option is unique with a true Leica school tailored black and white output. Andy Piper's review in this matter at Photo Net

Leica Digilux 2 Review

is strongly reccomended.

Sean Reid's review is also a must.

Digilux 2 Review - Part 1

Phil Askey's review will be very helpful too.

Leica Digilux 2 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

And, D2 is definitely a better camera than V Lux.

Pentax OTOH is a very very good camera with a heritage of fine photography, but not a Leica. Regarding street photography one must consider that it has a quite noticable mirror noise which is pleasing for the photographer but might not be welcomed as well with the photographee(s).

Tommy,.... Kamil is spot-on with his response.

I use my D2 in the above ways, in addition, I often attend my daughter's orchestral concert performances.

I set up a small tripod in front of me and it sits within 1-foot of the two occupants sitting in front of me. The D2 is so quiet that there is absolutely no response by the people sitting in front when I shoot. You can test this, usually with the slightest noise, during a performance, causes some heads to turn at the moment of the noise. I have shot hundreds of shots this way with zero flinches by those around the D2. With the D2 remote cable, no one knows when I press the shutter. It's an awesome way to photograph with no intrusion to the environment. (Obviously no flash being used.)

There are some many hints and tips to get the best from a D2 in this forum.....

consider the following:

a) the inbuilt D2 flash can often produce better exposures (indoors) than a big-beast external Metz, speaking from my experiences with my MZ40-3i

B) Chosing manual focus, the shutter lag is 94msec, AF is slower at around 500-600msec. (As documented in D2 literature)

c) ISO 100 is the sweet spot for the D2

d) D2 with a Lumix leather Everyready Case, has a pseudo hand-grip.

e) I quite often get 4+ hours continous battery life from each of my batteries

f) D2 at 705g, is light to carry all day..... it's small enough to have it in my Caribee waistbelt when I'm travelling

g) try and also get the Macro attachment and a Neutral density filter to help reduce the DOF for daylight shots.

h) night and low light shots are often better with no flash.

Stanami,

This is a very heavy answer. I do not think I deserved it. Netiher me nor the honorable members of the forum. If my words "not a Leica" is misunderstood I would like to withdraw my words and apologize from you and Pentax. I am a very old user of Pentax. Almost more than thirty years. I own a Pentax Digital also.

Being a user of both brands my humble observation is, Pentax is not a Leica and Leica is not a Pentax, No insults at all. They are different animals.

Therefore I kindly reject and return the image you have posted.:)

Withdraw the image I will due to your lack of humour

Pentax OTOH is a very very good camera with a heritage of fine photography, but not a Leica
, the implication is that the pentax is inferior,

ps they are not animals

Couldn't agree more with all you digilux 2 fans. I have 2 and love to use them. I use them for portraits, concerts, reportage etc.

The D2 is both quit, small, flexible and most important capable of delivering superb photos.

Check out my portfolio which is entirely shot with digilux 2.

both D2 and LC-1 where the most significant point and shoot camera available

it has some flaws, but its exceptional and NO comparison to V-Lux 1 or FZ50

the two cameras differ somewhat cosmeticly, with the D2 having nicer exposure settings being a lower saturation and contrast setting not available to the pana counterpart, and it has by far the higher resale and pose value

both came with unique lens hood and caps, but LC-1 came with a remote release, a green neon power ON light, auto iso, lens protection filter and body grip

other worthwhile accesories are,

the 69 to 72mm step up ring to be able to take filters

the DMW-LW69 0.82x wide angle adapter, gives 23-74mm ultrawide angle zoom at F:2 ( what dslr lens does this?)

the EVF while not great, at least allows 100% field of view at all zoom ranges, I use mine all the time but the 2 1/2" LCD is lovely to use as well

probably the best flash is one from Metz, in particular the Metz MZ 54 MZ3 and 3502 adapter, although the inovative bounce flash it came with is surprisingly powerful

even in critisism, some may compare this admirable P&S to a dSLR

Tommy I went through the same process as you, and arrived at the same point, I bought a mint boxed LC-1 in preference to FZ30 or FZ50 (aka V-Lux-1) and I love it. I use my LC-1 as a working photographer, and may well get a Leica D2 for backup.

.. I have nothing against the D2 it helped to pay my morgage off, but if you want to take action shots in crowds in low light it leaves a lot to be desired. It simply isn't made to cope with that style of photography. 400iso will pass as a B&W print at 13 by 19 inches but colour will not stand up to that size as there is too much noise in the shadows. But some believe I have my
