Time For A Deep Breath...

Somehow I don't think that my waiting for Leica to get its act together before I spend $4800. is going to hurt them. And if I spend my $4800 and by some chance the camera never delivers what it's purported to be, well, that 4800 is going to hurt me a lot more than its loss will hurt Leica.

Let's remember, Ernst is dead. He died a long time ago. And the people who made my M4 are no longer with the company. The company has changed hands since I bought that camera and lenses and these new guys will have to earn my trust. They haven't earned it yet. And I'll get along fine with the 5D until they figure out how to make an M8 that works.

These guys have a checkered history during the past 20 years or so, showing more interest in making silly collector's items than serious cameras for photographers. This business of having your customers be your beta testers rubs me the wrong way. That would never have been done back when Leica cameras were standard issue for professional photographers.

Leica is no longer E. Leitz. I'm not sure what it is. But I suspect that we'll find out in the next few months. And then I'll decide whether or not to buy their nice looking new camera.

Peter--If you want to continue trashing Leica and the M8, there are a slew of threads here on which to do that. I was hoping we could have some more optimistic points of view on this one.

I've already said this in the article revisions and in the other thread but I am also going to continue working with the M8 and trying the B+W filters as a solution for now. Despite the problems, I love the camera and the files it makes. Leica has described what solutions they have available in the near future. That doesn't preclude other, better, solutions over the longer term. My impression is that they are taking the concerns very seriously and are working intensively to see what can be done. I do think, for example, that they'll find a solution for the light streaks via a firmware change. The IR issue poses a big challenge but we'll see what they come up with beyond the filters.

I think that people who are nervous about the M8 and want to return it should do what they're comfortable with. Then there are others of us who keep forging ahead with it and see what happens. I don't think the baby should be thrown out with the bathwater.

Cheers,

Sean

Many of us have had an R-D1 and a few other digital cameras (5D, 10D, 20D, 1DS, etc., personally) and are very aware of the limitations of all systems. In my foolish, glass-is-half-full lunacy, I just choose to work around the issues at hand to arrive at what I find pleases me the most. In the end, I simply choose a different point of view about the whole introduction. Are the M8 issues disappointing?...yes. Do I expect fixes?...yes. In the meanwhile, I'm going to make the best use of my investment as I can (I'm going to shoot somebody). ;)

Now, where are my meds .....

Now, I'm sure Leica will make good in fixing the problem. What choice do they have? But I wouldn't be putting my head in the sand merely out of brand loyalty.

You're right, Steve. A lot of us do have brand loyalty, and I'm not the least ashamed to admit it. In my case, brand loyalty is the result of 20 years of Leica photography. They have earned my loyalty and I have decided I'm not going to dump it all because of one bump in the road--and that's all this is. Stay tuned, and have a look at some of the M8 images members of this forum begin to post in the next few days and weeks.

M8, Elmar 90mm/4 @ 4.0 - RAW + C1

Wow!

When the M8 gets it right, it really gets it right, doesn't it.

Beautiful picture Peter.

Thanks for sharing.

It's obvious the camera has tremendous capability, despite the glitches we all know about now.

Can they be fixed, too, to make it whole?

So anything is possible? Perhaps?

Thanks.

Allan

Peter, is that the new macro Elmar? I have been searching high and low for comments on that lens, and the macro adapter.
Carsten, It is a very old Elmar that I bought with the M3. It is still going strong...

No macro adapter, just shot at the minimum distance of 1 meter.

Thank you Allan. I agree, this camera can make great pictures, and not only B/W street shots.

Hey, are you sure you charged that battery for 3 hours? We've been timing you here.

I had a little bit of battery in there and took advantage of it:D

Okay looking at the images i need to practice on focusing a little better . I think this is normal . Now overall in C1 there is a slight pink cast. But this really is a color managemnt issue than anything else and a WB. Have not got into the problem area yet and the battery is charging just wanted try it. here is my 24th shot I think it was at f2 with the 50 lux. Play image folks , nothing special here

Well

what a refreshing thread - of reason

I am sure My thread on magenta is being ignored since I am considered

'taking this too light' maybe even a Leica apologist, but

if people bother to see my exampes, you can fix the Magenta problem (Magenta treat like moire) at least in aout 10 seconds in PS.

I didnt even try to optimize, but it tells me a simple development step in C1 with an eyedrop can get this behind us! I am sure Phase can do it

regards

Victor
