Hi all I just picked up a CL with a 40mm Summicron. Serial number suggests it was made in late 74 (143XXXX). Any tips on it. I made a battery adapter from a PX625 to hold a 1.4V zinc air hearing aid battery. Everything seams to be working ok. I also received a Leica CL booklet (sales Lit) and Book called Leica ( Instructions for M5, CL ,Leicaflex, Leicaflex SL & SL2)

First tip: Beware that the meter arm swings up into position directly behind the lens, when you wind on, so don't fit a collapsible lens!

The focusing cam is shorter and (I believe) steeper than on M lenses, so it is less accurate when focusing a regular M lens. ( there is a 50mm frame seen at the same time as the 40mm, the 90 shows up when that lens is attached, and the 50 goes away!)

The 40 Summicron-C and 90 Elmar-C were specifically made for it.

Enjoy!

John

I have noticed one small issue after cleaning it up and messing around with it. The meter dose not always come on when you move the film advance back. Sometime you need to tap the camera. I assume it would be a sticky switch? The guy I got it from had not used it in several years. It was taken out and fired several times every month but did not have a battery in it for a while.

You may find this useful:

CL Meter

Just be aware that with the CL meter, above the center line is underexposure and below the line is overexposure!

It is a great camera paired with the 40/2 Summicon-C, my 11 year old son is using one of mine and he loves it as it fits his hands perfectly.

Enjoy.

Thanks I read that post. I had the top off and cleaned the switch contacts. Meter is still acting funny. It's not dead just seams thatsomething is eaither sticking when turned off or a bad contact some where. If the camera is cocked and the meter turned off. After a while when you move the arm back to turn it on nothing happens unless you give it a slight tap or jar. Not the way it's meant to me thinks....

I have been trying diff things. I appears that when the meter needle goes into the off poss at the top of if it reaches that point through reading it sticks.

My CL too had a certain tendence to have the meter activation a little "unstable"... with behaviors similar to the ones you mention. When I sold it (1 month ago about... but it isn't the one you bought... :)), the dealer who acquired it told me that it could be fixed by a good lab. For me it was not such an important issue... as Kenneth, me too considered it mainly a mountain camera (and I still keep my Rollei 35 for this purpose) with no great problems of metering, and anyway I always kept a small Gossen in my pocket...

Congratulations. You will find that the Summicron 40 is the most underestimated (or underpriced) lens exsisting!

I got mine a couple of weeks ago. Had the same problem. I finally cocked the winder and activated the meter arm several hundred times and it went away.

I use it with heliar 15mm, so the rangefinder accuracy doesn't matter. The 40mm/1.4 nokton goes onto M6.

Great cameras both!

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a Cl for some years; this was one of the best little leicas i ownd; it will pay you to send it to MK for a CLA; you will be amazed at the difference in use. As for the 40mm- it is a marvellous lens- it took the combination to Corsica, and the resultant trannies were amazing. I hope you enjoy this little gem.
