Hello all. My name is Tony Scott and I'm new to here. The reasons for joining this Leica forum are twofold. Firstly, I own a Leica Digilux 2 - and I'm very fond of it! And secondly all of my SLR equipment is of no use in this digital world, because I've owned and used my Minolta XM for many years and Minolta/Konica/Sony don't believe in the MC/MD Minolta lens mount.

I can't afford a Leica M8 but think I'd like an Epson R-D1 to 'start' with. This after a lot of browsing regarding Canon/Nikon/Olympus et al. I've also excluded the Panasonic/Digilux 3

since I'm not a fan of the 4/3 system.

So, am I in the right place for an Epson R-D1?

Welcome - is the Epson still available - I thought it had been discontinued [ heard about that on the internat so may not be correct], but as it can use Leica lenses this is the place[digital forum]

Welcome to the forum.

Digilux 2 is a great camera. Many forum members have it. Also some have the Epson and - from what I've seen - are happy with it.

Personally I have also considered the Epson as a economical entry to digital M as I am mostly to digital R systems. The Epson is available 2nd hand for 1,400$ at present here where I live. But also I hope the Digilux 3 will develop into something usable in terms of Leica lenses for it.

But the forum here is a great place to air ideas and doubts and get good advice. My personal dielemma is that I prefer slide film but need to do soem digital as well. And I like both M and R. So you see where that is leading in terms of cameras accumulating..! I find the forum very inspiring as to what is interesting trying and what is not.

So again, welcome!

Welcome to the forum. I'm new here myself.

The Epson has just been updated to become the RD-1s. I read a review in Amateur Photographer a couple of weeks back. It was quite critical on a number of points, but it seems the 's' is well worth getting over the original model.

If you contact me off forum, I'd be happy to send you my copy.

Welcome to the Forum Tony. I have the Panasonic LC1 which is almost the same as the Digilux. It is indeed a very nice camera and sutable for many sittuations. You are not the only one who can't afford an M8 so never mind. You will find lots of usefull info here on the Forum so enjoy.

Tony, Welcome to the Forum!

I, too, have a Digilux 2 and like it very much. Many pix posted. I also have some excellent film cameras including M3 and M6 and LCM. I still use them extensively in conjunction with a dedicated film scanner. The results are superior to most current digital cameras except the professional high end digital backs. So why not explore that route. Much cheaper, too, but time consuming.

Thank you all for your welcoming comments. To reply chronolgically.....

Brunom, the Epson can still be bought new from Janan in its R-D1S new format and quite often appears second hand on Ebay, which is where I'll probably chance getting one.

Overgaardcom, here in England, it looks like you have to replace the $ with a £ to reflect the second-hand price.... but then again, for all things elecctric/car/camera this seems to be the case!!

DTD, it looks as though there is an update for the R-D1 that converts it to a newer R-D1S for free! From what I have read, this mainly allows the saving of raw plus jpeg.

Calshot, the lens supplied with the Panasonic/Leica looks like a major reason for buying it. Even though I don't like the idea of a 4/3 system, I could still be tempted.....

wda, thanks for the suggestions! I still use my Minolta together with a dedicated Minolta negative/slide scanner. And I agree, the results are surprisingly good. These

were scanned with a flatbed scanner from 20 year old negatives, so excuse the dust, please!!

It's good if you can update the Epson.

I use a Minolta neg scanner – Dimage Scan Elite II.

The Leica lens on the Panasonic DMC-L1 does look interesting as I use an Olympus E-1. I assume the aperture ring on the lens wouldn't work on an E-1?

I like the analogue controls of the camera itself, but the innards are basically an Olympus E330, so I'm not going to get too excited. Some rather limiting design issues were pointed out in this weeks BJP review – don't know if these apply to the Leica version.
