Advertisement Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Hi ptomsu, Take a look here what should I do with my US$ 6000 ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wilfredo Posted November 10, 2006 Share #42 Posted November 10, 2006 For those of you thinking of going the 5D route perhaps you should hold off. Rumor has it that there is a new and improved version of the 5D coming out in a few months that will have self cleaning capabilities, and a more weather proof body. I plan to make that purchase. But if I had made plans for the M8, and I had the funds for it right now, I would wait for the Leica solution to come through, and then buy. Eventually, I hope to purchase an M8. Perhaps as an incentive, Leica will offer a rebate of $500.00 to help recover from this fiasco, that would be a good time to buy! palaeoboy Posted November 10, 2006 Share #44 Posted November 10, 2006 I would wait for the problems to be fixed before you purchase. If the fix is just an add on filter and require you to use coded lenses only then consider the 5D or the Kitchen.
xjr Posted November 10, 2006 Share #45 Posted November 10, 2006 I have a better solution: give them to me, I'll buy a 2nd M8 I have an even better one: Give them to me instead to add another MP to my armoury !!!!

Phil Askey from Dpreview wrote in his preview of the M8 that buying a Leica is as much with the head as it is with the heart. I agree The 5D is ridiulously cheap now (esp for those of u in the US who can enjoy the new rebates), gives excellent images that are 1) higher res than the m8 2) exhibit lower noise at high ISOs 3) dont exhibit magenta casts, light streaking, or green blobs. And you don't need any filters to achieve that. Add $99 for Capture ONE LE (same software as the m8) and u're set. Yet, we're all still hankering after a M8. I've read of pple here spending hundreds of dollars on filters just to get their $5000 USD cameras working *somewhat*. It's ridiculous. And the scary thing is, I could have been one of them if my m8 had arrived Thankfully, after looking at all the problems with the m8, I've finally come to my senses and decide to wait till ALL the problems are fixed before even *thinking* about buying one. And the fixes should not include the use of ANY filters!
ken_tanaka Posted November 11, 2006 Share #47 Posted November 11, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Invest in a short-term fixed income instrument, such as a CD, within a year of maturity. (NOT a money market account.) The money will be safely tucked away out of reach. At current rates (just over 5%) the M8 will cost you approximately $100 less (future value) for each month the money's invested. It will probably take Leica 6-9 months to get this situation completely under control.

That's fine but I wouldn't have what I want, a rangefinder that produces files the quality of the 5D in a camera the size of a slightly obese point n' shoot. carstenw Posted November 11, 2006 Share #49 Posted November 11, 2006 Suprisingly, I found the M8 to have about the same level of shutter noise as my Canon F5. It is an entirely different set of sounds, but seemed to have about the same ability to attract attention. It is not loud per se, but really mechanical sounding as the shutter winds after each shot. Neither is anywhere near as quiet as an M7. Strange, maybe I have a really quiet one, but I don't recall hearing the winding sound at all, even in quiet environments. I can't check it until it comes back from focus adjustment though.

Exactly, and exactly why I am selling my 5D to get this camera. I will do some comparison tests, but from what I have seen already, the M8 about matches the 5D in effective resolution, while giving better colours (and more noise at high ISO). All in all, a very good trade. I would say discuss it with your wife. Maybe use some of the money for the kitchen, and just be ready to pull it out of a hat when the M8 is re-released. Alternatively, buy now along with a B+W 486 filter and use it as much as you can, waiting for the fix from Leica. That is the route I have chosen. MSmelik Posted November 11, 2006 Share #51 Posted November 11, 2006 I would guess the M9 would be the perfect camera to wait for. This might come sooner than expected.
