lenjh Posted June 16, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 16, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently purchased a very nice IIIg with a Elmar 5cm 2.8 and have sent both into DAG for CLA. In the interim I was looking for a lens to compliment the Elmar. I saw a mint Summarit 2.8 cm F/3.5 or perhaps a Summacron 5cm F/2. Cost is somethwat of a consideration but I am not opposed to working the credit card. 5cm F/1.4? I prefer "street" photography, shooting from the hip, architecture, landscapes but more near than far. Correction on the one lens I was looking at: Summacron 35 F/3.5. Thank you in advance for you suggestions. Best Regards, Leonard

Pocket sized, and the framelines (or rather corners) are ready in the IIIg viewfinder. That's what I have to complement my IIIg and Elmar f/2.8. If you get a lens wider than 50mm you'll also need an auxiliary viewfinder. As well as the f/3.5 or f/2.8 versions of the Summaron (not Summacron) 3.5cm I'd consider the modern Voigtlander 35mm f/2.5 which has a very good reputation. For shooting from the hip you may want something wider still: 25 or even 21mm.
earleygallery Posted June 16, 2009 Share #3 Posted June 16, 2009 I agree with John. I have a 9cm f4 and its a lovely lens. Also a 25mm Snapshot Skopar with viefinder which I use on my lllf. It's not rangefinder coupled but has 3 click stops on the focus scale - used at f5.6 or f8 you can quickly zone focus for street photography.
lenjh Posted June 16, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted June 16, 2009 Great thanks for the recommendations on the 9cm - I did not even think about that even though I knew of the 9cm frame lines. Is there one model of the 9cm different than the others? I see a lot on the net at reasonable prices. I will have to look at the pdf of the IIIg manual I have to see if it is listed as an add on lens and the product ID. On the wider lenses can you become, with practice, able to appreciate your field of view without the adapter say from 15 to 50 feet. Snapshot Skopar - I don't know that I know that lens? Kind Regards, Leonard
bill Posted June 16, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 16, 2009 Leonard, this is a very personal choice so I like others can only speak of my own journey. I had a IIIc, now a II, which I use 95% of the time with a 5cm Elmar. I have a variety of other LTM lenses, some CV and some Leica, ranging from 15 to 135mm, including a 9cm Elmar. I use my II for street and travel photography. If I carry a second lens at all it is usually the 3.5cm Elmar f3.5. The 9cm does not honestly get a lot of use, which is a bit of a surprise to me because I tend more to the standard-tele world than the wide. Hope this helps, Bill
