50mm for Leica M

We have seen several discussions regarding what was said and not said by Leica management during the recent Forum meeting, but an interesting issue which I have not seen discussed here is customer preference regarding 50mm lenses.

We were told that the 1.4/50 ASPH outsells the 2.5/50 Summarit by a margin of 2 : 1 by numbers. It also outsells the Summicron 50.

I asked if there would be a new 2/50 soon as it has been around for more than 30 years. I was told that the designers surely were in a position to improve on the current lens, but not at the current cost. A version comparable to the 1.4/50 ASPH in quality would apparently be almost as expensive.

The bestselling of all Leica M lenses is the 2.8/28 ASPH, which comes as no surprise I guess.

One could argue that it it isn't broken then don't fix it. I think the 50mm Summicron M is a beautiful lens and if they are saying that to produce a 1.4 would be more costly that seems very fair to me.

I am surprised to hear that the 28mm lens is thier best selling M lens. I had a 28mm focal length lens some years ago and found very little use for it preferring the 35mm everytime

Well, a 28mm is (kind of) equal to a 35 on the M8.

Though having said that, the 28mm is my favorite focal length on film (24 on M8).

Right, I hadn't realised the difference with digital being a bit of a Neanderthal when it comes to non film, and yes, I had a 24mm which I used extensively for mountain landscapes which gave a minimalist barren waste look to Kodachromes
