DennisPT Posted June 15, 2009 Share #21 Posted June 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Quite a lot of local Leica users were burnt by that shop because of the every-minute-different 'seafood price' as well as poor customer service (can you imagine the price of a Leica 39mm UV/IR filter ranges from US$120 to $180 within the same day?). If you are going to stay in HK for a day or two, it is quite risky to buy such a high dollar item. Also as Brian said, you won't have the Leica UK passpport in which will become valuable shall problem arises. My 2 HK cents. Good luck.
Advertisement Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Hi DennisPT, Take a look here Where to buy a 24 summilux in Hong Kong on a quick visit?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
guidomo Posted June 15, 2009 Share #22 Posted June 15, 2009 HK is not a bad place per se for Leica shopping. Good deals can be had, but all depends on local supply and demand as well as exchange rates. As long as you know what the lens costs at home, why not shop around? almoore Posted June 15, 2009 Share #23 Posted June 15, 2009 I wouldn't recommend that anybody who doesn't live in HK to buy in the city. Up until a few years ago Leica gear was significantly lower in price than in London or NY, but now you'll do well to get HK dealers to match those prices despite the lack of a sales tax. Secondhand prices are comically high. Over the years I've bought a lot from Tin Cheung, but I'd hesitate to recommend them to others. Jennifer is very pleasant and very professional, but a number of her male colleagues are charmless chancers. If she sees one of her more unpleasant colleagues attempting to hustle one of her known customers she dashes over to intervene before it turns ugly, but if you're unknown I suspect she turns a blind eye. It's a shame, because Tin Cheung is one of the best stocked dealers you'll find anywhere in the world, but I expect my transactions to come with more dignity than they can guarantee. Also, be aware that if you want to pay by Visa or Mastercard they'll add a three per cent surcharge, and if you want to pay by AmEx an even higher charge. I'd suggest Man Shing/Wing Shing to anyone from out of town - the staff are vacuous, the prices aren't the very lowest, but there's no chance whatsoever that they'll attempt to rip you off. The HK tourist board go to great lengths to portray the city as a shoppers paradise, but, compared, to most cities in the world, it's closer to a shopping hell. DennisPT Posted June 15, 2009 Share #24 Posted June 15, 2009 But I doubt Man Shing / Wing Shing has 24 lux. I have been waitng to get a 24 lux from Schimdt and I'm still waiting.
almoore Posted June 15, 2009 Share #25 Posted June 15, 2009 Tin Cheung have no more leverage over official supplies from Schmidt than Man/Wing Shing, although they do (unlike Man/Wing) admittedly also deal in grey imports.
DennisPT Posted June 15, 2009 Share #26 Posted June 15, 2009 Interesting, Tin Cheung had complained to Leica Germany about official HK dealers selling grey market Leica products when M8 first came out. Rumor is that they wanted Schidmt to take the dealership away from that shop. Now they are dong it themselves!
jaay Posted June 15, 2009 Author Share #27 Posted June 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for all the advice. I think it's too much to ask of someone else who doesn't know anything about cameras. I guess i'll wait for some UK stock to arrive.
almoore Posted June 16, 2009 Share #28 Posted June 16, 2009 Dennis, Tin Cheung, as far as I'm aware, have always dealt in parallel imports and been entirely open about it.
