A friend of mine is making a brief stop in Hong Kong in a couple of weeks - can anyone recommend somewhere that might have the new 24 summilux for a good price?

Relatively new here, so if I'm out of order please forgive me :-)

but there's a "Decent Leica dealer in Hong Kong" thread in the Rangefinder Forum

Ahem .. http://www.rangefinderforum.com

Go to eBay and search for the lens you want... You will find there are 2-3 regular sellers there that have shops in HK (Kowloon - Rent's too high in HK proper and the food is just better on the cheap side of the harbor ;) )...

I have visited the Photo Arsenal Ltd. - In Kowloon (A blocks walk from the Tsim Sha Tsui subway stop)... Evan was very nice and friendly. ;)

One of the best leica dealers in Hong Kong is Tin Heung camera Company. They have a large collection. I have dealt with them and are very professional. They are located on 6B Carnarvon Road, Tsimshatsui, Hong Kong. Tel: (852) 2722 1265 you could email them sales@tincheungcamera.com.hk or even chk out their website Tin Cheung Camera Company ???????? - Sells cameras, lenses and related accessories

Their sales manager is Mr.Timmy Chin Fu Ho

I agree. I bought my M8.2 with 75 and 35 Summarits from Tin Heung last November and went back this April for the new 24 Elmar. Everything was factory fresh and works perfectly. I got my 2 free filters from Leica and would purchase from them again. It's a small shop but they appear to have just about everything in stock (no one else had the 24 available on the same day which I required because I only had one day in HK).

The HK Dollar is pegged to the US Dollar and for Europeans HK was a better place to shop when the EUR was real high against the USD.

As for Leica dealers: on the website of Schmidt Marketing HK you'll find a list of all the official dealers in HK. They are all trustworthy.

Tin Cheung usually have the best stock, but will not quote prices on the phone.

Leica products in Hong Kong are not cheap even though we don't have sales tax and VAT.

Leicas are not cheap items so wherever you go it's not cheap. :D

Go for Tin Cheung if you are buying Leica in HK. Look for Jennifer Tsang.

Maybe to call her and ask for pricing and see what you get. Spending a dollar or two on phone calls can save you a lot.:D

Thanks for the suggestions. I've sent them an email, but their web list price is £500 more than I can get it for in the UK!!

You will also loose the benefit of the UK Leica passport. Also Leica UK will not help you in the event of any problems.

I am not sure if I really agree with this, way back b4 the M8.2 came out and I was in HK, the M8 was like US$1,000- dollar cheaper than in the states. H/e, the lens prices could be more or less the same but you can certainly negotiate for a couple of hundred dollars cheaper. other than that, watches are also always cheaper in HK

Depends on what you are buying. HK dealers do not follow MSRP but price in accordance to supply and demand and such prices will fluctuate daily. People here calls it "seafood" price. For high demand and low supply items it is going to be more expensive than elsewhere compared to low demand item like the M8 or any Summarit lens.

For folks who have not come to Hong Kong before, let me try to explain 'seafood price' is: Most of us who go for seafood in HK don't know exactly what they are eating (I'm talking about species) and price differs everyday according to supply and how knowlegable the customer is. They don't have/follow MSRP as Ray mentioned so the seller can charge the customer whatever they want to in order to get the most profit and that's what we call 'seafood price' here.

Right, and places like Tin Cheung are notorious for this. They would not quote prices on the phone because they need to see your face to work out how much the lens will cost you

Other places are better, try "Kowloon Photo" for example.
