Good service from B&H Photo

I just ordered some film from B&H Photo in NYC. Even factoring in shipping costs, it works out at almost half the price of buying film in New Zealand. I was also very impressed with the service and fast delivery time -- door-to-door, half way round the world, from placing the order till receiving took just three-and-a-half days with UPS. And strangely, UPS was faster and cheaper than USPS! No idea why.

This time I am trying some Kodak Elitechrome 100, which I have read is a very similar formulation to E100G. It may lack the ultra fine grain and tonal qualities of Fuji Astia 100F (another favorite), but the Elite should be good for landscapes and travel. I also ordered some more of the reliable Fuji Superia 400 print film, and shall try out Fuji Pro 160S and the new Kodak Ektar 100 print film -- although slide film remains my mainstay.

Even adding GST @ 12.5% it would still be cheaper. One roll of slide film here costs at least NZD20, or USD12. In the US cost is typically half that. GST would add less than USD1 per film. It's the shipping costs that really add up. Buying from the US is definitely cheaper than Europe -- 60 dollars not 60 euros.

For anyone in NZ reading this; I'm a longtime purchaser of things from overseas, camera bits, bicycle bits - you name it.

You only pay GST if the incoming goods value is greater than $400 NZ dollars.

So - aim to buy just under that threashold. Doing several lesser purchases with freight costs still being cheaper than the added GST (plus the additional wait as Govt contacts you to advise)

UK is the cheapest place to buy most things as VAT comes off their price as they sell to you, also they mostly ship via Royal Mail which is much cheaper and reliable - similar to NZ post.

When purchasing from the States they usually hide considerable cost (and extra profit) in fixed freight charges - UPS, Fedex or whoever the business uses. They are very expensive.

The cheapest place for a Kiwi to buy film at the moment with the weak pound is mailshots in the UK.

Who says we can't get good service?

Akiva, where would you place Freestyle on that list? I buy most film/darkroom supplies from BH or Freestyle.
