comapedrosa Posted June 12, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I am looking to upgrade my online gallery. Years ago i settled on pbase, but I am wondering if there is something out there that would fit the below requirements (out of zenfolio, smugmug, picassa, flikr, pbase, something newer, etc, etc) 1) No need to resize/sharpen for web (i.e., I upload what my visitors would download for their own use (print etc), but that's all I have to do (the platform would take care of the rest - I can probably live with some sub-optimal auto-resizing) 2) Cool looking (think flash etc) 3) Easy uploads - no need for html coding etc (i don't want to create my own platform! - it's hard enough to come up with the time to update the gallery) 4) "Basic functionality": subfolders, ability to include comments/annotations, viewing statistics, ability to download full-res photos, etc 5) Fast for visitors (pbase has been getting slower and slower) 6) The cherry on the cake would be indexable by search engines (i.e. Google) These are sites I really like - but i don't know how complex they would be to implement or if they would satisfy the above requirement: Photography [by] Tafari TiltViewer BananAlbum FWIW, here's what I have so far: comapedrosa's Photo Galleries at pbase.com Thank you for your input!! PS: Some might recognize this question from a recent posting i made on dpreview... but that doesn't seem to go anywhere - I suspect I don't have the etiquette right anymore... mark_a_h Posted June 13, 2009 Share #3 Posted June 13, 2009 If you are using a Mac, the included software can get you set up for all those points on your wish list. I upload my high-rez shots to iPhoto and they are resized to my photo website created in iWeb. Making that website involves no html, just use one of their templates. It's very easy to customize those templates as well. When you publish your site to Apple's mobileme hosting, they add some cool photo viewing options to your site. Mobileme also provides an additional standalone photo gallery. Apple - iWeb - Create your own website on a Mac.

comapedrosa Posted June 14, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted June 14, 2009 Mark, thank you for your advice. Looks like what'm after, unfortunately i'm not on Mac. Jaap and John, I've spent some time on Zenfolio and Photoshelter, and they look indeed as professional as it gets. I couldn't find a simple way to get something like this though: Photography [by] Tafari It's probably my lack of technical skill. I'd very much appreciate if you had any hint or example for me. Thanks!
John Thawley Posted June 14, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 14, 2009 I couldn't find a simple way to get something like this though:Photography [by] Tafari Thanks! How fortunate. Seriously, that is NOT what you want. I know that seems rather blunt, but my advice comes from 15 years (yes FIFTEEN) of developing internet solutions. The operative word is CLEAN. The site should be about your work... not some Flash or Javascript whistles and bells. Customers or potential customers want to get to the photos. They want clean simple and elegant navigation... but most of all, they want CONTENT. Content is king. Just an opinion... JT
comapedrosa Posted June 14, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted June 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) :-) You're probably right. And i couldn't agree more about Content being king (and that i should probably spend more time on that than on any website!!) We are in different leagues, and i'm very far from having any customers. All i want at this point is entice the occasion visitor (mostly friends & family) to browse around. The website i linked to seemed engaging when i stumbled upon it... the ideal for me would probably be to put a widget like that on the home page and build a more effective site behind it. I found your site very professional, appealing and efficient. Needless to say that your content is stunning!
