You'll need to open either C1 or some other App that can see/read/display DNG files. Those App's being C1 PS-ACR LR or Aperture (Mac program So this program means nothing to you) along with several others that I'm not familiar with. SJP Posted June 9, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 9, 2009 1 You also need to check that your M8(?) is writing DNG's, the factory default is "jpeg only" if I recall correctly. Check the camera menu settings. 2 Are you using a card reader? Transferring DNG's via the USB cable is a real pain as you get the wrong file extension for some inexplicable reason. 3 Why use jpeg at all? For me this is pretty useless, except for B&W which can be quite decent. It really slows the M8 down a lot compared to DNG only. Succes!! microview Posted June 9, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 9, 2009 Don't know about PC but with Mac card reader shows folder called DCIM, inside which is another called 104LEICA, inside which are ... DNG files. I tend to drop these into a desktop folder and give it a name and Capture 1 shows that folder, opens with all raw files for processing. jaapv Posted June 9, 2009 Share #8 Posted June 9, 2009 You can use CS3, the inbuilt RAW processor (ACR) can handle DNG, provided it is reasonably up to date. For importing your files I recommend ImageIngester - Software for professional digital photographers which will drop your files in a folder of your choice, allow you to choose which files to upload through thumbnails, automatically sort by date, rename if you wish and add your copyright details to EXIF. Jamie Roberts Posted June 9, 2009 Share #10 Posted June 9, 2009 You don't need to import files on Windows though (even though Jaap's suggestion is fine). Just get a good USB2 card reader, create a folder on your system and drag and drop all the files to the folder. Back the folder up to another drive if your images are important. Then you can just point C1 to that folder and you're done. You can also use PS / ACR or Lightroom, but give C1 a whirl. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

jaapv Posted June 10, 2009 Share #13 Posted June 10, 2009 Open the files in C1 or ACR (Photoshop) using the settings: 16-bits, aRGB, TIFF When using C1 you must export the files to either Photoshop or Lightroom. Use these setting as far as possible in your postprocessing process (Elements does not support 16 bits fully) There is a case to be made for dropping down to sRGB a bit earlier in the process if you are planning to go to sRGB anyway. Remember the change from aRGB o sRGB loses colour information that cannot be recovered. After you have finished your postprocessing convert the file to 8 bits (for many applications you can maintain aRGB, but for the web you must use sRGB) and save as a jpeg. When I use C1 I process my images to the same folder I store the image in. I create a new folder for every days shooting. So I have a main folder for each year, like now 2009, then a sub-folder of the month and day, 0610, that the images from that day get placed in. In C1 I select that days folder to process the images to and add C1 to the original file name. That way I don't have to go looking/searching around for the processed images from C1. You change the folder the images are processed to in the Process dialog of the C1 interface. I never convert to JPEG unless I'm going to use that image on my website or for posting to forums or sending a image in a email. Otherwise I always work from a TIFF or if I use PS/ACR for processing M8 DNGs a PSD file. Once I have all my edits done in either a TIFF or PSD file and I'm going to send it or post it to some website I have actions in PS to convert it to sRGB and size it. It takes RAW files and converts them into something you can see. In C1 you can change/correct white balance, tint, hue, brightness, contrast and the like. You can then output (Process) that raw file as a TIFF or JPEG or both. It is then you need another program like PS to do more edits or print the image. Unless you delete the RAW, DNG for the M8 and whatever Canon RAW files are, off your hard drive they will always be there. In C1 processing your images to either TIFF or JPEG, or both, does not delete or change the RAW file. They will always be on your hard drive. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
