90 Elmarit M f2.8 question.

Recommended Posts

Maybe this will anwer your question. Yesterday I was trying to find old datasheets and during my search found this:

This lens provides owners of the titanium finish LEICA M6 with the opportunity to add the popular 90 mm focal length to their equipment, matching the existing 35 mm- and 50 mm-lenses. The lens tubing is completely made of brass, but otherwise, it corresponds to the proven ELMARIT-M f/2.8/90 mm.

As for all the "titanium" versions of Leica products, it's only a finishing of surfaces, no solid titanium in itself... I had some experience in MACHINING titanium... it sends skyrocketing the production costs for it "eats" costly tools at an impressive rate, requires special precautions on machine tools for dangerous powders... it wouldn't have any sense in a camera.

As I understand it, Leica did at one point make some cameras with real titanium top and bottom plates. Very limited run, and I forgot the base model. M6 or M7.

M7 and Mp I think. Both had solid top and bottom plates, but all the previous stuff, incl lenses was just the finish.

And they did make a one-off M, in solid titanium throughout, for an arab sheikh. Lord only knows how much it cost him. There was an article about it in an issue of LFI a few years ago.

There was a limited run of titanium M7 cameras. They came with a set of matching 2/28asph., 1.4/50asph. and 2/90apo-asph. lenses. I have never heard of a titanium MP.
